Dave Bautista Reveals Incredible Transformation Training for ‘God of War’ as Kratos
Live-action adaptations of video games have become a staple in Hollywood, and few casting announcements have sparked as much enthusiasm as Dave Bautista taking on the physically demanding role of Kratos. With his wrestling background and a series of action-packed film roles, Bautista has established himself as an actor committed to physical transformation.
This commitment is now on full display as Bautista prepares for his new role in Prime Video’s adaptation of ‘God of War’. He was cast as Kratos after original lead Ryan Hurst had to exit due to a torn bicep injury, and Bautista quickly jumped into his training regimen.
On Instagram, Bautista shared a shirtless update showcasing his progress just weeks into his training. “3rd week in to weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin a bike! LFG!” he wrote.
Bautista’s transformation is particularly impressive given his journey. He previously lost a significant amount of weight, going from approximately 315 pounds during his WWE days to around 240 pounds as he transitioned away from his bulkier physique that characterized his wrestling and early film roles.
He has openly discussed the reasons behind this change, noting that his previous size became uncomfortable both physically and on screen. “I’m still a large human being. At 6’4 and 240 pounds next to your typical actor, I look like a gorilla, and it’s distracting. I’ll probably lose a few more pounds. I’m just killing myself to be this trim,” Bautista shared, as reported by SFF Gazette.
Now, at 57 years old, he faces the challenge of rebuilding significant muscle mass to embody one of gaming’s most iconic characters. Bautista has reflected on how his fitness approach has changed with age, stating that his current training methods have him feeling better than he has in years due to improved cardio and overall conditioning.
The role of Kratos comes with specific physical expectations, given the character’s long-standing presence in the ‘God of War’ video game series, where he is typically portrayed as a muscular, battle-hardened warrior. Hurst had reportedly spent months gaining size before his injury necessitated a change in direction for the production.
Bautista now faces the opposite task, working to regain the mass he spent years intentionally losing. Fans and fitness experts have already noticed his rapid progress just three weeks into his training, with many citing his wrestling background as proof that he has the experience to achieve his desired physique within a tight timeframe.
The Prime Video series, developed by Ronald D. Moore and confirmed for two seasons, will explore Kratos and his son Atreus as they navigate their complex father-son relationship while fulfilling Kratos’ late wife Faye’s final wishes. Bautista will star alongside Callum Vinson, Teresa Palmer, and Max Parker in this adaptation of the beloved PlayStation franchise.
With production set to resume now that Bautista has officially taken on the role, all eyes will be on his ongoing transformation as he works toward the conclusion of his three-month training period.
