Comedy franchises rarely get the opportunity to reinvent their formulas decades later, but that’s exactly what’s unfolding with one of the genre’s most beloved family sagas. Nearly 26 years after Ben Stiller first faced Robert De Niro’s polygraph machine and constant scrutiny in ‘Meet the Parents,’ the roles are finally reversed.

‘Meet the Parents’ became a cultural phenomenon upon its release in 2000, leading to two sequels, ‘Meet the Fockers’ and ‘Little Fockers,’ and establishing itself as a holiday classic centered around escalating in-law drama. Now, the franchise is back with a fourth installment that flips the family dynamic, placing Stiller’s character in a position he once dreaded.

The new chapter, titled ‘Focker In-Law,’ has just unveiled a new trailer, confirming its theatrical release date of November 25. The film features Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, and Ariana Grande as they navigate the latest round of awkward family interactions.

Directed by John Hamburg, who penned all three previous films in the series, ‘Focker In-Law’ turns the original premise on its head by putting Stiller’s Greg Focker in the intimidating role once held by De Niro’s Jack Byrnes. This time, Grande’s character, Olivia Jones, is under scrutiny as the girlfriend of Greg and Pam’s son, Henry, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo.

Discussing the role reversal central to the film, Stiller noted that his character experiences the same challenges that De Niro’s Jack once imposed on him. He described Grande as “a joy to work with” and praised her for bringing “a very, very new sensibility” to the franchise, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

The new footage emphasizes this dynamic, introducing Olivia as a former FBI hostage negotiator who claims she can “free” Henry from being “emotionally hostage” to his overbearing father. This premise unsettles Greg while simultaneously winning over Jack, who instantly takes a liking to Olivia and wants her included in the family’s circle of trust.

‘Focker In-Law’ reunites much of the franchise’s original cast, with De Niro reprising his role as Jack Byrnes, Blythe Danner returning as Dina Byrnes, Teri Polo back as Pam Byrnes Focker, and Owen Wilson once again playing Kevin Rawley. Newcomers Beanie Feldstein as Samantha Focker and Eduardo Franco join the mix, adding fresh energy to the familiar ensemble.

Reflecting on her character’s interactions with the ensemble during a 2026 Actors on Actors conversation, Grande described Olivia as someone Stiller’s character struggles to connect with, noting that the situation worsens for Greg since Olivia “get[s] along gorgeously” with De Niro’s Jack, according to Variety. This built-in generational tension seems to be a key comedic element, echoing the franchise’s longstanding themes of family anxiety and unexpected alliances.

The original ‘Meet the Parents’ grossed $330 million worldwide upon its release, solidifying the franchise as a significant box office player, with its sequels continuing that success into the 2010s. With Grande stepping into a leading comedic role, ‘Focker In-Law’ appears poised to leverage both nostalgic appeal and Grande’s rising star power to attract a new generation of moviegoers.

Set for release on November 25, the film is strategically positioned for the holiday movie season, much like its predecessors, and looks ready to embrace the family chaos that made the original trilogy a comforting watch.
