Choice-driven horror games have developed a passionate fanbase over the last decade, with the original ‘Until Dawn’ standing out as a defining title in the genre. The 2015 survival horror sensation earned its reputation through branching narratives where every choice had significant consequences, allowing players to decide which characters survived and which faced a gruesome fate on Blackwood Mountain.

This legacy has been building towards a full sequel since PlayStation first announced ‘Until Dawn 2’ during a State of Play showcase in June, hinting at a new tropical setting and an entirely new cast of characters. Fans have been eagerly awaiting further details since that initial reveal.

Those details finally emerged during Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, which showcased a new trailer filled with gameplay footage and confirmed the release date. ‘Until Dawn 2’ is officially set to launch on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, giving fans a specific date to mark on their calendars as the countdown begins.

In contrast to its predecessor’s snow-covered mountain setting, ‘Until Dawn 2’ shifts the horror to Akishima Island, a secluded tropical paradise that has been abandoned for decades and conceals dark secrets. The official synopsis reveals that the story follows the Dead True ghost-hunting crew as they pursue their biggest story yet, leading them to Blackwood Sanitorium, where an encounter with a supernatural survivor named Yoona takes a chilling turn.

The sequel is being developed by Firesprite instead of Supermassive Games, the studio behind the original title, but the franchise’s signature Butterfly Effect gameplay mechanic remains intact. Players will again influence the story’s outcome through their choices, determining who survives and who falls victim during the group’s harrowing experience.

The new cast includes Neil Newbon, known for ‘Baldur’s Gate 3,’ and Dacre Montgomery from ‘Stranger Things,’ among others who lend their likenesses and voices to the game’s ensemble. Notably, Peter Stormare is set to reprise his role as Dr. Hill from the original game, hinting at a continuity that connects the sequel back to the Wendigo-infested universe of Blackwood Mountain.

Along with the release date announcement, PlayStation revealed that pre-orders for ‘Until Dawn 2’ will begin on September 10. Fans who pre-order either the Standard or Digital Deluxe Edition starting on that date will unlock Dr. Hill-themed bonus content, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will specifically include an additional Y2K Neon Vibes Pack and a Dioramas of Death extra feature.

The game is designed as a standalone experience, meaning newcomers won’t need to be familiar with the original title to dive into this fresh island-set nightmare. This approach reflects a broader trend in narrative horror sequels aimed at attracting both longtime fans and players new to the choice-driven format.

The January 28, 2027 release date positions ‘Until Dawn 2’ as one of the first major titles on PlayStation’s calendar for the new year, arriving just weeks before another highly anticipated release, ‘God of War: Laufey,’ which is currently scheduled for February. This lineup suggests that Sony is preparing for a particularly strong start to 2027 with its first-party and exclusive offerings.

With a new trailer now confirming both the setting and stakes of this island-bound nightmare, excitement for ‘Until Dawn 2’ continues to build ahead of its early 2027 launch.
