Mount Everest has inspired numerous films that capture the thrill of survival at extreme altitudes, yet few have focused on the individual who made the historic climb possible. Apple’s latest original film aims to fill that cinematic gap.

‘Tenzing‘ tells the incredible true story of Tenzing Norgay, the Himalayan Sherpa who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, became one of the first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Directed by the acclaimed Jennifer Peedom, known for her documentary “Sherpa,” the film reinterprets one of history’s most celebrated adventures through the lens of a figure often reduced to a mere footnote in Hillary’s narrative.

Apple has now unveiled the first teaser for the film, confirming its lead cast and establishing a release strategy that will see ‘Tenzing’ hit theaters on October 9, followed by its premiere on Apple TV on October 16.

Genden Phuntsok stars as Tenzing Norgay, with Tom Hiddleston portraying Edmund Hillary and Willem Dafoe taking on the role of expedition leader Colonel John Hunt. According to Apple TV Press, the film also features Caitríona Balfe as expedition secretary Jill Henderson and Thinley Lhamo as Tenzing’s wife, Dawa, who plays a crucial role in convincing Hunt that Tenzing deserves to be on the British climbing team as a true climber rather than just support staff.

This perspective is central to what distinguishes ‘Tenzing’ from other Everest-focused films. As noted by Apple TV Press, the narrative emphasizes the contrast between how Western climbers viewed Everest as a challenge to conquer, while Tenzing revered the mountain as Chomolungma, the sacred mother goddess. This spiritual distinction allows the film to delve into the deeper cultural tensions present in the historic 1953 expedition.

The screenplay is penned by Luke Davies, with production managed by See-Saw Films, the Oscar-winning company behind “The King’s Speech.” Filming reportedly commenced in 2025, taking place across various locations in Nepal, including the Everest region, Mustang, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Bandipur.

‘Tenzing’ is set to make a significant impact, opening the 22nd Zurich Film Festival on September 24 for its European premiere, following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 15. Hiddleston, Dafoe, and Peedom are all expected to attend the Zurich opening night gala, indicating a strong positioning for awards season.

This festival rollout provides ‘Tenzing’ with substantial visibility ahead of its broader theatrical and streaming release, placing it alongside other prestigious titles vying for attention during the fall movie season. The film’s dual release strategy, debuting in select theaters a week before its Apple TV launch, mirrors the approach Apple has adopted with several of its recent original films.

Tenzing Norgay’s real-life journey to the summit followed six previous attempts, and his historic achievement in 1953 has influenced generations of Sherpa mountaineers. His evolution from porter to celebrated guide established a legacy that has shaped the paths of later Nepalese climbers, solidifying his importance beyond that singular ascent.

With a robust festival launch already secured and a cast featuring Hiddleston and Dafoe, ‘Tenzing’ is poised to finally bring much-deserved cinematic recognition to one of mountaineering’s most significant yet historically overlooked figures.
