Streaming renewals often fly under the radar, but sometimes a show’s impressive numbers demand attention. Emmy Rossum’s crime thriller has been steadily gaining momentum on Hulu over the past few weeks.

‘Furious‘ debuted on July 27 with a hybrid release strategy, launching three episodes simultaneously before transitioning to weekly episodes leading up to its finale on August 31. This strategy paid off quickly, as the show entered the Top 10 in streaming originals during its first week, landing at No. 10 with 372 million minutes viewed, according to Deadline.

The show’s early success has continued to rise. Disney confirmed that ‘Furious’ has amassed over 43 million hours watched since its premiere, equating to approximately 6.2 million estimated views based on total viewing time divided by runtime, as reported by Variety.

One of the most impressive aspects of Disney’s latest report is the finale’s performance compared to the premiere. The Season 1 finale attracted 90% more views within the first day of availability than the premiere episode, indicating strong word-of-mouth momentum throughout the season, rather than a decline, according to Variety.

Such growth is notably uncommon for a debut series, especially one that opted for a staggered release instead of a full-season drop. As noted by CBR, viewership numbers are expected to keep rising as new Hulu subscribers discover the show and catch up now that the entire first season is available.

‘Furious’ follows FBI agent Alice Black, portrayed by Rossum, as she investigates a cunning female serial killer named Catherine Grace, played by Lola Petticrew. Loosely inspired by the 1987 film “Black Widow,” the series blurs the lines between hunter and hunted as Alice’s investigation becomes increasingly complex due to Catherine’s own hidden trauma.

Hulu’s decision to renew ‘Furious’ for Season 2 came just days before the Season 1 finale aired, an unusual move for a platform that typically waits for comprehensive viewership data before committing to another season. As reported by Deadline, this early renewal followed the show’s consistent presence on Luminate’s weekly rankings, where it peaked at No. 5 with 2.43 million U.S. views during its first full week of release.

The series is also believed to be the top show across both Disney+ and Hulu globally for August, and it currently ranks as the No. 2 freshman drama on Hulu in the U.S. year-to-date, with 4 billion cross-media impressions, according to Deadline. Coupled with an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, these figures made the early renewal an easy decision for the studio.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, known for “New Girl,” “The Dropout,” and “Dying for Sex,” ‘Furious’ also features Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Alice’s FBI colleague Nora Washington and Scoot McNairy as NYPD homicide detective Danny Kelly. In a conversation with Variety about what’s next, Meriwether mentioned that Season 2 will likely follow Alice and Nora as they tackle a new case within the C20 unit, which focuses on investigating sex crimes.

With its critical acclaim, timely renewal, and confirmation that its finale nearly doubled its premiere audience, ‘Furious’ has firmly established itself as one of the standout breakout hits of Hulu’s 2026 lineup.
