Zach Cregger has emerged as one of horror’s most reliable hitmakers, transforming both ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons’ into genuine phenomena that resonate with audiences beyond critical acclaim. This impressive track record makes him an intriguing choice to revive a franchise that has struggled for over two decades to effectively translate its video game origins into box office success.

The cinematic journey of ‘Resident Evil’ has been tumultuous, despite its inherent horror appeal. The original 2002 film debuted with a modest $17.7 million, and the franchise has never quite achieved significant box office breakthroughs. Even ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ in 2010, which boasts the series’ strongest domestic opening, only reached $26.6 million, while 2021’s ‘Welcome to Raccoon City’ faltered with a pandemic-era opening of just $5.3 million.

However, that narrative is poised for a change. Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot is currently tracking for a projected $35 million opening weekend, a figure that would establish it as the highest domestic debut in the franchise’s history, easily surpassing ‘Afterlife’s’ longstanding record.

Industry insiders suggest that this number could potentially rise even higher. Early reports indicate strong first-day ticket sales, with some estimates pushing the opening weekend as high as $50 million, and other outlets tracking presale momentum have suggested figures ranging from $60 million to $80 million, fueled by high demand for premium format screenings like IMAX and PLF.

Such projections would position ‘Resident Evil’ alongside, or even ahead of, some of Cregger’s recent box office successes. ‘Weapons’ debuted with $43.5 million domestically and went on to gross $270 million globally. Given the buzz surrounding this new film, tracking analysts believe Cregger has the potential to surpass his own career-best numbers with this franchise reboot.

Part of the excitement stems from Cregger’s unique approach to the source material. Instead of focusing on a well-known character like Leon Kennedy, Cregger has crafted a narrative around an entirely original protagonist who navigates the world of ‘Resident Evil 2’ without revisiting familiar storylines.

“I’m not telling Leon’s story,” Cregger explained in an interview with Fangoria. “I’m not using any of the characters from the games. I’m telling my story that exists in the world of Resident Evil 2.” This decision reflects his commitment to honoring the franchise’s lore while avoiding the pitfalls of rehashing narratives that longtime fans already know well.

The film follows Bryan, a medical courier portrayed by Austin Abrams, who becomes embroiled in a deadly outbreak while making a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. Cregger describes Bryan as an everyman lacking combat skills, likening his journey through escalating horror to Frodo’s quest into Mordor, an ordinary figure thrust into a mission far beyond his capabilities.

Sony has scheduled ‘Resident Evil’ for a theatrical release on September 18, strategically placing it in the post-Labor Day window that has historically favored horror films looking to counterprogram against larger fall releases. With tracking numbers already indicating a franchise-best debut before the film has even premiered, all signs suggest Cregger is on track to deliver yet another box office triumph, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most dependable directors in the genre today.

Whether the final figures align closer to $35 million or soar toward the higher end of projections, one thing is clear: the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise is set to achieve its best opening weekend to date.
