‘Legend of the White Dragon’ Reviews Show Stark Contrast Between Critics and Fans
Independent superhero films rarely evoke such contrasting reactions, but few movies this year carry the emotional weight that ‘Legend of the White Dragon’ does. What should be a straightforward discussion about a low-budget passion project has turned into a genuine case study on how critics and audiences can perceive the same film so differently.
‘Legend of the White Dragon’ marks the final on-screen appearance of Power Rangers icon Jason David Frank, who dedicated over a decade to developing the project before his passing in November 2022. Directed by Aaron Schoenke, the film follows Erik Reed, a former superhero known as the White Dragon, who has spent three years in hiding as a fugitive, trying to clear his name while reconnecting with the family he has kept secret.
This backstory sheds light on the film’s unusual Rotten Tomatoes scores. Currently, it holds a mere 10 percent rating from critics based on early reviews, while its audience score, the Popcornmeter, remains steady around 77 to 80 percent, based on over fifty user ratings. This wide gap is particularly striking, even for divisive genre releases.

Professional reviews have largely focused on the film’s technical aspects. IGN issued a particularly harsh 3 out of 10 review, likening the film’s production quality to the notoriously low-budget works of filmmaker Neil Breen, a comparison that does not favor ‘Legend of the White Dragon’.
Critics have consistently pointed out issues like clunky dialogue, an overreliance on flashbacks that disrupt the pacing, and action sequences that feel stiff or underfunded given the film’s limited budget. Some reviews have even described certain visual elements as appearing artificially generated or unrefined, reinforcing the narrative that the film struggled to overcome its independent production limitations.
In stark contrast, fan reactions have painted a different picture. Audiences have praised Frank’s screen presence, the sincerity of key fight sequences, and especially the behind-the-scenes footage that plays after the credits, showcasing a vibrant Frank on set during production.
This post-credits footage is particularly significant for longtime fans, providing what many viewers have described as a necessary sense of closure following Frank’s unexpected death. Several audience reviews have noted that simply watching Frank in this role one last time made the ticket worthwhile, despite the film’s technical flaws.
The root of the divide ultimately lies in what critics and audiences prioritize while watching the film. Critics have approached ‘Legend of the White Dragon’ as a technical superhero production, evaluating it against standard genre filmmaking criteria such as pacing, visual effects, and script quality, and finding it lacking in these areas.
Conversely, audiences seem to engage with the film as a tribute or memorial, valuing the emotional impact of witnessing Frank in one of his final performances over polished execution. This distinction clarifies how a film that scores in the single digits with critics can simultaneously receive strong ratings from viewers who come in with a different set of expectations.
Adding to the emotional depth, Frank’s daughter, Jenna Frank, appears alongside him in the cast, a detail that resonates with fans following the film’s long and challenging journey to release. The film also reunites Frank with several familiar faces from his ‘Power Rangers’ days, including Jason Faunt, Ciara Hanna, and Cerina Vincent, along with newer additions like Mark Dacascos, Michael Madsen, and David Ramsey.
Well Go USA Entertainment acquired the film for North American distribution, intentionally releasing it in select theaters on August 28 to coincide with National Power Rangers Day. This scheduling choice reinforces how the film’s release has been treated as a tribute rather than a conventional theatrical rollout. Given the starkly different responses from critics and fans, ‘Legend of the White Dragon’ serves as a clear example of how a film’s review score can depend heavily on the viewer’s expectations.
