‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Rerelease Features 5 Unique Theater Formats
Marvel Studios is once again tapping into nostalgia as a marketing strategy, and this fall, they are doing it on a grand scale. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ still a few months away, the studio is leveraging one of its most successful films to build excitement, and the re-release plan is more intricate than usual.
The focus is on ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the groundbreaking 2019 film that concluded the Infinity Saga and earned nearly $2.8 billion globally. Instead of simply re-releasing the film, Marvel has revamped the presentation, providing fans with fresh reasons to purchase tickets, even if they have seen the film multiple times.
This revamped presentation, titled ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ will hit theaters on September 25 in five distinct formats: Standard, Infinity Vision, IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX. Each version offers a unique way to experience the film, allowing audiences to choose how immersive or enhanced they want their return to Endgame’s epic finale to be.
Infinity Vision is a new certification introduced by Disney for premium large-format theaters, ensuring large screens, bright visuals, and superior sound quality. This release marks the first under this new program, with theaters needing to meet strict technical standards, including screen size and projection criteria, to qualify.
Both the IMAX and Infinity Vision formats come with an added perk. Viewers who attend the Encore presentation in either of these certified formats will receive an exclusive preview of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the upcoming sequel from the Russo brothers, which is set to release on December 18. This exclusive footage, along with a special introduction and end tag, will not be available in standard screenings.
The IMAX rollout is particularly significant given the current situation surrounding ‘Doomsday.’ With Warner Bros. and Legendary securing an exclusivity deal that locks ‘Dune: Part Three’ into IMAX screens for three weeks, ‘Doomsday’ is anticipated to open without an IMAX presence in the U.S. during that time. In contrast, ‘Endgame Encore’ will have full access to IMAX screens for a limited run.
For those seeking a more immersive experience, ScreenX projects the film across the auditorium’s side walls, creating a 270-degree panoramic viewing experience that fills the viewer’s peripheral vision. Since ‘Endgame’ was not originally filmed with ScreenX in mind, certain scenes will reportedly be extended using CGI or archival footage to enhance the expanded frame.
4DX offers a different experience altogether, utilizing motion seats that shift, vibrate, and react in sync with the on-screen action, effectively transforming the theater into a stationary ride. Both ScreenX and 4DX screenings will include the new post-credits material as long as they are shown in an Infinity Vision-certified theater, ensuring fans don’t miss out on bonus footage while enjoying the more theatrical formats.
Standard theaters complete the lineup, providing audiences with a traditional viewing experience without the additional technical enhancements. However, it remains uncertain whether this version will include any of the new footage found in the premium formats.
The timing of this re-release is clearly intentional, landing approximately twelve weeks before ‘Doomsday’s’ December premiere. ‘Endgame Encore’ serves as both a nostalgic experience and a promotional tool for Marvel’s next major ensemble film. It also provides an opportunity for fans who missed ‘Endgame’ in theaters back in 2019, or those who never saw it in IMAX, to experience it on the big screen once more before the next chapter unfolds.
With five viewing options and a first look at ‘Doomsday’ included in the premium formats, Marvel is banking on fans returning for multiple viewings.
