Netflix has been on a quest to innovate its content offerings, exploring various categories from live sports to interactive specials. However, the platform’s foray into video game marketing has yielded unexpected results.

This venture was centered around Rockstar Games and its highly anticipated sequel, a title so eagerly awaited that even a sneak peek became a global sensation. Instead of releasing the footage on YouTube like previous teasers, Rockstar opted for an exclusive premiere on Netflix before making it available elsewhere online.

The outcome has been remarkable. ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look‘ amassed 31.1 million views on Netflix within just four days, making it the most-watched title of the week across the platform’s entire library.

The 27-minute special debuted on Netflix on August 27, and Rockstar uploaded it to its YouTube channel just six hours later. Despite the brief exclusivity, the viewership numbers propelled it to the top of Netflix’s English-language film list in 87 out of 93 countries tracked by the streamer.

To put this achievement in perspective, the next closest title on the chart was ‘The Whisper Man,’ a star-studded thriller that premiered on Netflix the day after the GTA special, finishing the week with 23.2 million views. On the television side, the true crime documentary ‘Death of the Pastor’s Wife’ led that list with 19 million views, indicating that the gaming preview outperformed every other title on the platform across all categories.

The demand for the special surged on its premiere day, reportedly causing a 35% increase in concurrent users and briefly disrupting the service. This excitement also translated into tangible growth for Netflix, with a 24% rise in app downloads linked to the release.

While Netflix’s viewership figures are impressive, it’s important to note that the platform measures viewership differently than YouTube. Netflix counts a single household’s viewing of a title only once, regardless of how many times it is replayed, while YouTube counts each individual view. Even accounting for this difference, the extended look has garnered over 17 million views on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel since its release there.

This marks a significant milestone for Netflix, which had never before hosted video game content in this manner. The special was categorized under the platform’s English-language film category for charting purposes, effectively treating a 27-minute gameplay preview as it would a theatrical release or original film.

The footage, captured entirely from in-game PlayStation 5 graphics, provided fans with their most in-depth look yet at the game’s protagonists, Jason and Lucia, through both cinematic and gameplay sequences set in the fictional Vice City. This preview was the most substantial released to date, following two earlier teaser trailers that had already built considerable anticipation over the years.

Given the scale of what’s coming, the excitement is understandable. The game is set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, giving fans a concrete date to anticipate after years of speculation and delays.

For comparison, Netflix’s biggest English-language debut week remains ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5, which attracted 59.6 million views in its opening week. While the GTA special didn’t reach that all-time record, achieving such numbers with a promotional trailer rather than a full narrative series highlights the immense demand for this game.

Whether Netflix will continue to explore gaming content after this success is uncertain, but the figures indicate a genuine audience eager for crossover experiences like this one.
