New Images of Hal Jordan and John Stewart in ‘Lanterns’ Episode 4 Released
HBO’s gradual storytelling in ‘Lanterns’ has transformed each episode into a captivating puzzle filled with new lore and evolving alliances. What began as a simple buddy-cop mystery involving two intergalactic officers has gradually unveiled a more intricate narrative, interlacing themes of betrayal, manipulation, and generational trauma into its core mystery.
The complexity intensified with the third episode, which completely redefined John Stewart’s origin story. Viewers discovered that Stewart’s parents were not mere bystanders in his journey to becoming a Green Lantern; instead, they were active participants in a long-term scheme orchestrated by the enigmatic Guardian known as Lianna.

Now, as we approach the fourth episode, HBO and DC Studios have unveiled the first official images from this installment, offering fans fresh glimpses of Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Lianna in her human form. The episode, titled “The Weenie,” revisits the year 2016, reuniting Jordan and Stewart at a time when their relationship was far more complex than it appeared on screen.

At this point in the timeline, John is already aware that his training under Hal is merely a formality, as the Guardians are secretly planning to replace Hal with him when the time is right. This dynamic adds a significant layer of dramatic irony to the new stills, especially since Hal remains oblivious to the unfolding plan.

The show’s ongoing flash-forward structure adds to the tension, revealing that Hal dies in 2026, a decade after John’s recruitment into the Corps. Earlier episodes depicted John’s emotional reaction upon discovering Hal’s body, while Guy Gardner appears to take up the ring afterward, raising questions about what leads John to eventually step away from the mantle himself.
The Episode 4 trailer, released by HBO Max, heavily emphasizes the unraveling mentor-mentee relationship. In the preview, Sinestro refers to John as “a contingency plan, a backup” during a conversation with Hal, a description that Hal contests. Sinestro escalates the stakes by warning Hal that he may need to kill John Stewart, hinting at the extent of Hal’s manipulation as the season progresses.

Interestingly, the newly released image gallery does not feature any shots of the highly anticipated Hal and Sinestro confrontation hinted at in the trailer, even though that face-off seems to be a significant turning point for the episode. Instead, the stills focus more on the 2016 timeline and Lianna’s ongoing role in the narrative, sparking speculation among fans regarding her true motives, considering her comic book counterpart’s complex history with the Guardians.
John’s journey to earning the ring has gained new emotional depth following the revelations from Episode 3. His father, John Stewart Sr., was originally chosen by Abin Sur’s ring years prior but declined the opportunity out of fear, a choice that ultimately led to the ring being passed to Hal. This backstory adds another layer of tension between the two Lanterns as they enter this new chapter.
‘Lanterns’ features Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, with a supporting cast that includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. The series is executive produced by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King, with Episode 4 specifically credited to writers Justin Britt-Gibson and Lindelof.
New episodes of ‘Lanterns’ air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max, with the first three episodes already available for streaming. With Hal’s fate already sealed and John’s true purpose now revealed, the anticipation for their inevitable confrontation feels more imminent than ever.
