Christopher Nolan has consistently pushed the boundaries of cinematic formats, but even his team may not have anticipated the magnitude of this record-breaking achievement. Filming an entire movie with IMAX cameras was a bold technical risk, one that could either lead to spectacular success or serve as a cautionary tale about ambition outpacing audience demand.

In this instance, the risk has paid off in ways that are transforming the entire premium format industry’s perspective on box office potential. What began as an unprecedented production decision has evolved into one of the most successful theatrical runs ever seen within a single exhibition format.

As reported by box office tracker Luiz Fernando, ‘The Odyssey’ is on track to become the first film in history to surpass $500 million globally in IMAX ticket sales alone, having already achieved an all-time record total of $486 million through its eighth weekend, with $279 million coming from international markets and $207 million from domestic sales.

This impressive total gives Nolan’s epic a substantial $210 million lead over ‘Avatar’, which held the all-time IMAX record for over 15 years until ‘The Odyssey’ emerged. This gap is remarkable, especially considering ‘Avatar’ was once deemed nearly unbeatable in the premium large format arena.

The film’s rapid ascent through the IMAX record books has been nothing short of extraordinary. According to Variety, ‘The Odyssey’ surpassed ‘Avatar’s’ $271 million lifetime IMAX total just weeks after its release, prompting IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond to label it a “monumental achievement” that shattered the format’s long-standing box office record with a month still remaining in its global run.

Much of this momentum can be attributed to the film’s rare use of IMAX’s 70mm film format, which is available on only 41 screens worldwide. These premium 70mm showings alone have generated $66 million, averaging an astonishing $1.6 million per location—a level of per-screen performance that is virtually unprecedented in modern theatrical releases.

‘The Odyssey’s’ 70mm run has been extended through September 30, providing the film with an eleven-week IMAX theatrical window, as reported by MovieWeb. This extension has allowed the film’s IMAX total to continue climbing beyond initial projections, even as it competes with fellow blockbuster ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in many of the same premium theaters.

Beyond the format-specific figures, ‘The Odyssey’ has become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, and it has also become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. This is an impressive feat for an R-rated, nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, a combination of genre and format that would typically be seen as a challenging sell to mainstream audiences.

IMAX itself has reaped significant benefits from the film’s success, with the format recording its highest-grossing month ever in July, according to CNBC. Gelfond described this surge as part of a broader “IMAX awakening” among audiences, a trend that titles like ‘Dune’, ‘Oppenheimer’, and ‘Sinners’ had begun to cultivate before ‘The Odyssey’ propelled it into a new realm.

With the $500 million IMAX milestone now within reach and weeks still left in its theatrical run, ‘The Odyssey’ is poised to redefine what a premium format release can achieve for years to come.
