Classic anime rereleases have become a dependable trend for U.S. distributors eager to tap into nostalgia, but few titles carry the cultural significance that Katsuhiro Otomo’s cyberpunk masterpiece does. Nearly four decades since its debut, the film is regarded as one of the most influential animated features ever, inspiring works from ‘The Matrix’ to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’.

This legacy has turned each theatrical rerelease into an event for both longtime fans and newcomers, even when past domestic runs were modest by commercial standards. However, this latest revival seems to have surpassed anything the film has achieved in the U.S. before.

‘Akira’ returned to theaters in the U.S. and Canada on September 4, presented in a restored 4K format by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment. It was shown in both 4K and IMAX formats, featuring Japanese audio with English subtitles as well as an English dub. The film grossed an impressive $2.7 million during its opening weekend.

This figure is nearly five times greater than the total of all previous domestic theatrical releases combined. ‘Akira’s’ original 1989 run earned $439,162, while a 2001 rerelease added another $114,009, bringing the film’s entire prior domestic total to just $553,171 across both releases.

The scale of this jump highlights how much larger this rollout was compared to earlier attempts to bring the film back to American theaters. Previous rereleases were often limited, playing in only a few theaters rather than the extensive 4K and IMAX rollout this version received.

This U.S. release follows a similarly successful overseas run. The same 4K restoration premiered in U.K. and Irish cinemas in April, grossing over £1 million and becoming the highest-grossing classic release of the year in that market, as well as the fourth-highest opening weekend for an anime film in the region.

Crunchyroll has positioned the rerelease as both a celebration for longtime fans and an introduction for newcomers unfamiliar with the film’s legacy. The studio described the restoration as an opportunity to experience Otomo’s “definitive anime masterpiece” on the largest screens available, coinciding with the film’s ongoing influence on modern science fiction.

Set in the dystopian Neo-Tokyo of 2019, three decades after a mysterious explosion destroys the original city, ‘Akira’ follows biker gang leader Kaneda as he attempts to save his childhood friend Tetsuo, who gains catastrophic psychic powers after a military experiment goes awry. The film’s combination of hand-drawn animation, political commentary, and body horror has kept it relevant in pop culture discussions for over thirty-five years.

With domestic audiences showing up in numbers that surpass every previous American theatrical run combined, this rerelease has effectively redefined what a classic anime revival can achieve at the U.S. box office. Whether this momentum continues into future weekends will determine just how far this restored version can climb.
