Awards season follows a distinct rhythm, with the Creative Arts Emmys playing a vital role in setting the stage. These awards, presented over two nights prior to the glamorous Primetime ceremony, often go unnoticed yet significantly influence the upcoming show.

This year’s Creative Arts Emmys took place on September 5 and 6 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, celebrating various categories from guest acting and casting to editing, sound, and stunt work. The second night particularly focused on scripted television, distributing below-the-line and guest-performance awards that typically don’t receive airtime during the main broadcast but hold considerable significance.

By the end of the event, one new comedy had quietly emerged as the standout winner. ‘Widow’s Bay’ secured eight awards, more than any other series at this year’s ceremony, placing its debut season among the elite shows that excel before the Primetime Emmys even commence.

The show’s impressive haul included Best Casting for a Comedy Series and Best Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series in the half-hour category. Additionally, Betty Gilpin won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance, adding to the show’s overall accolades.

‘Widow’s Bay’ wasn’t alone in its success on night two. HBO’s ‘DTF St. Louis’ followed closely with six wins, featuring significant supporting acting victories for David Harbour and Linda Cardellini, along with directing and writing honors for creator Steve Conrad. ‘Spider-Noir’ garnered five awards despite its recent cancellation, while ‘The Pitt’ and Apple TV’s ‘Pluribus’ each finished the night with four wins.

The evening also featured an emotional highlight when the late Rob Reiner received a posthumous Emmy for his guest role on ‘The Bear,’ earning a standing ovation. Shailene Woodley celebrated her first-ever Emmy win for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role in ‘Paradise,’ while Ernest Harden Jr. took home the corresponding guest actor award for ‘The Pitt.’

In other categories, ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ was awarded Best Movie, while ‘South Park’ won Best Animated Program for the first time since 2013. ‘DTF St. Louis’ also swept both limited-series supporting acting categories, marking a first for these awards at the Creative Arts ceremony instead of being included in the main Primetime broadcast.

The overall nomination counts this year highlight the competitive nature of the field. ‘The Pitt’ led with 25 nominations, while ‘Hacks’ received 24 nods for its final season, setting a new record for a comedy. Apple’s ‘Pluribus’ followed closely with 18 nominations.

For ‘Widow’s Bay,’ the eight wins provide significant momentum heading into the main event. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to air on September 14 on NBC and Peacock, and a strong showing at the Creative Arts has historically indicated how a new series might perform in the major categories.

Whether this momentum translates into major wins for Outstanding Comedy Series or its lead actors remains to be seen, but ‘Widow’s Bay’ has already established itself as one of the season’s most celebrated new shows. With the Primetime ceremony just a week away, the show’s early achievements have set a high standard for others on the ballot.
