Garret Dillahunt Explains Why William Macon Went Fully Nude in ‘Lanterns’
HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ has earned acclaim for its slow-burn tension and surprising character decisions, but episode 4 showcased a moment that shifted focus from cosmic mysteries to raw intimidation. William Macon Sr., portrayed by Garret Dillahunt, has emerged as one of the season’s most unpredictable characters, and the September 6 episode took that unpredictability to new heights.
The pivotal scene unfolds after John Stewart and Hal Jordan infiltrate Macon’s heavily fortified compound, seeking to find a concrete link between him and a suspected Manhunter hiding in Rushville, Nebraska. Instead of uncovering answers, the two Green Lanterns find themselves captured, leading to one of the series’ most bizarre confrontations.
When John and Hal are brought before him, Macon unexpectedly strips completely naked and demands that John, who is aware of his talent for illustration, draw him in the nude. Dillahunt has now revealed what was going through his character’s mind during that unusual power play, exclusively sharing with SYFY Wire that Macon genuinely believes his mysterious benefactor has made the town a safer and healthier place, citing the empty hospitals as evidence.
Dillahunt elaborated that Macon feels a deep sense of indebtedness to this benefactor, who he claims cured his cancer and transformed him into what he describes as a super-fit senior citizen. This gratitude, according to Dillahunt, drives Macon’s protectiveness and influences his decisions regarding who belongs in Rushville, all in the name of keeping his benefactor safe.
There’s also a personal layer to the scene. John had previously been intimate with Macon’s wife, Zoe, played by Poorna Jagannathan, without realizing she was married, which clearly unsettled Macon, even though John was unaware of the situation.
Dillahunt noted that this lingering tension contributes to Macon’s need to assert dominance in such a peculiar way, using his own physical confidence to unsettle John and regain control of the situation. Stripping down was not merely an act of intimidation directed at both Lanterns; it also served as a pointed message aimed squarely at John.
Dillahunt has openly discussed how this role differs from his usual projects. He has previously mentioned a tendency to gravitate toward smaller, independent films with dedicated fan bases, making the scale of ‘Lanterns,’ which attracted millions of viewers shortly after its premiere, a new experience for him.

The physical demands of the nude scene were not lost on him. Dillahunt humorously remarked that reading the script sent him straight to the gym, admitting he thought such on-camera moments were behind him at this stage of his career, though he credited the cast and crew for maintaining a light and humorous atmosphere during filming.
Behind the scenes, the creative team has emphasized that the scene was a deliberate choice rather than a mere shock tactic. Producers have stated that the intention was to portray an unconventional display of power, using vulnerability and nudity as an unexpected means to convey authority instead of weakness.
With the Manhunter mystery still unfolding and Macon’s true loyalties remaining uncertain, this moment adds depth to a character who has proven challenging to decipher throughout the season. Whether Macon ultimately becomes a genuine ally or something more sinister, Dillahunt’s portrayal suggests there is more strategy behind his actions than viewers might initially perceive.
