Warner Bros. Faces Box Office Struggles Not Seen in 25 Years

Hollywood studios thrive on their theatrical calendar, and few years have highlighted this truth as starkly as 2026 has for Warner Bros. Following a successful 2025, the studio’s fortunes have taken a sharp downturn, transforming what should have been a year of growth into one of its most difficult theatrical periods in recent memory.

This downturn has been evident with each release, as promising films consistently underperform at the domestic box office. Even the studio’s stronger titles have struggled to achieve the kind of numbers that were once standard for a major Hollywood player, leading to a milestone that few industry analysts anticipated.

According to box office analyst Gitesh Pandya, Warner Bros. is entering September without a single film surpassing the $100 million domestic mark in 2026, excluding the pandemic-affected year of 2020. This marks the first time in 25 years that the studio has faced such a situation. Typically, by this point in the year, at least one film would have crossed that threshold, if not more.

The figures behind this milestone reveal a troubling trend. Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ leads the domestic box office with $84 million, followed closely by ‘Mortal Kombat II’ at $79.8 million and ‘Supergirl’ at $72.4 million. J.J. Abrams’ ‘The End of Oak Street’ lags behind at $51.4 million, while ‘Evil Dead Burn’ rounds out the list with $32.2 million domestically.

Pandya’s analysis also underscores how isolated Warner Bros. is among its competitors this year. All four of the other major studios have at least two films that have crossed the $100 million mark domestically in 2026, making Warner Bros.’ shutout even more pronounced. The studio hasn’t faced a year like this since 2001.

‘Supergirl’ has become a symbol of the studio’s challenges. The DC Studios release opened to just $37.1 million domestically and saw a steep 74 percent drop in its second weekend. This decline has reportedly led Warner Bros. to brace for a loss exceeding $100 million, considering the film’s production budget of approximately $170 million plus additional marketing expenses.

Other notable releases have also struggled. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’ managed only $24 million worldwide against a budget of $80 to $90 million, while ‘They Will Kill You’ earned around $19 million globally on a $20 million budget, leaving little chance for either film to turn a profit.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s quarterly report has directly acknowledged this rough patch, revealing a 46 percent decline in theatrical revenue year over year compared to previous years that included hits like ‘A Minecraft Movie’ and ‘Sinners.’ The company’s shareholder letter specifically pointed to the first half of the year falling short of expectations, naming ‘Supergirl’ among the disappointments.

Despite these setbacks, the studio has several major releases still scheduled for 2026 that could change the narrative before the year’s end, including Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ and additional DC Studios projects. Whether any of these upcoming titles can finally push Warner Bros. past the $100 million domestic threshold remains uncertain as the fall release season approaches.

For a studio that was celebrated just a year ago for delivering some of the industry’s biggest breakout hits, this extended cold streak marks a significant turnaround. How Warner Bros. navigates the final months of 2026 could influence the conversation around its theatrical strategy for years to come.
