Sebastian Stan Pitches Marvel a Unique ‘Sicario’ Concept for Bucky Barnes
For over a decade, Sebastian Stan has been the quiet presence alongside the Avengers, delivering some of Hollywood’s most praised indie performances between his blockbuster roles. He has garnered an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe, and a reputation as one of the boldest character actors of his generation, even as most fans recognize him primarily as Bucky Barnes.
This duality has characterized his career for years. He has portrayed a brainwashed Soviet assassin in one film and Donald Trump in another, all while contemplating a distinctly different narrative for Bucky.
In a profile featured in New York Magazine, Stan disclosed that he recently pitched a “Sicario-esque” Bucky Barnes film directly to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He described the idea, which he presented somewhat humorously, as a low-budget thriller that would replace the franchise’s typical spectacle with a more intimate storyline.
“We keep a real small budget,” Stan explained while outlining the concept. The narrative follows a man who believes he recognizes someone from his past linked to his brainwashing, becoming obsessed with tracking that individual down.
“He goes on a whole journey to try to figure out who this person is,” Stan elaborated, framing the concept as a paranoid character study rather than a superhero adventure. The comparison to ‘Sicario’, Denis Villeneuve’s gripping 2015 cartel thriller, suggests a mood that diverges significantly from Marvel’s previous portrayals of the character.
This idea taps into what has always made Bucky Barnes intriguing. Since ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ introduced him as a mind-wiped assassin with fragmented memories, the character’s psychological struggles have often been overshadowed by action sequences.
While ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ explored his guilt and efforts at rehabilitation, a full solo film centered on his complex identity has yet to come to fruition. Stan’s pitch indicates he is still grappling with that unresolved narrative, even as Bucky’s future in the MCU appears to be heading toward grander, cosmic challenges.

Currently, Stan is set to reprise his role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, alongside a vast ensemble cast. This trajectory makes a quiet, “small budget” detective thriller feel even more like a tonal outlier, which may explain why Stan presented it as a half-serious idea to Feige.
Nevertheless, the timing of this revelation has fans buzzing. Bucky Barnes has been part of the MCU since 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, making him one of the franchise’s longest-running characters without ever leading his own film, intensifying the demand for a story that fully centers on him.
Whether Marvel would ever greenlight such a stripped-down project remains uncertain. The studio’s recent slate has leaned heavily toward interconnected event filmmaking rather than smaller, character-driven narratives, and Stan himself characterized the pitch as more of a casual thought than an active development.
Even so, it’s easy to understand why this concept has resonated. A grounded, morally ambiguous thriller featuring one of the MCU’s most complex characters, portrayed by an actor capable of handling such material, sounds like the kind of creative endeavor that longtime fans have been yearning for.
For now, it remains just a pitch, stemming from an interview rather than an official announcement. However, in an era where Marvel has shown a growing willingness to experiment with tone and format, it’s not the most far-fetched idea either.
