Fantasy adventure series thrive on their finales, and few understand this better than the ‘Librarians’ universe. With a legacy of magical mysteries and the charm of found family dating back to 2014, ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter’ has spent its second season building toward a highly anticipated confrontation, hinted at in trailers featuring dragons, castles, and knights.

That confrontation culminated in the two-part season finale, which addressed a question that loomed throughout the year: what was Merlin truly after? The season pitted Librarians Vikram, Lysa, and Connor, alongside Guardian Charlie and Elaine, against Dominic Monaghan’s portrayal of the legendary wizard, whose obsession with magic once led to the downfall of Camelot.

The finale, titled “And the Camelot Conundrum,” leads viewers to believe that Merlin has successfully traveled back in time to rewrite history, only to reveal a shocking twist in the closing moments. Instead of aiding Arthur in fulfilling his destiny, Merlin seeks to control the future for himself, claiming the sword in the stone and the throne, using his knowledge of historical mistakes to justify his total domination.

However, this plan unravels dramatically. As Merlin becomes increasingly consumed by power, members of the Librarians team appear to fall one by one, and his ideal version of Camelot devolves into the very tragedy he aimed to prevent. It is only after this catastrophic downfall that the episode unveils its true twist.

None of it actually occurred. The Librarians never traveled back to Camelot; instead, they trapped Merlin in a dream state, using his own tactics against him to stage a nightmare scenario that forces him to confront the true cost of his obsession. The horrifying events viewers witnessed were essentially a magical intervention rather than an altered timeline.

Series creator Dean Devlin confirmed this in a post-finale discussion, explaining that Merlin’s journey was always intended as a redemption arc, emphasizing the necessity of hitting rock bottom before any real change could occur. Monaghan echoed this sentiment, describing the character’s emotional journey as genuinely humbling for someone who previously displayed little humanity.

“I think that’s the real humbling moment for Merlin because you don’t see a massive amount of humanity in him. You see someone desperate for power, desperate to be the leader, to be the person who’s making the decisions,” Monaghan told TV Insider, elaborating on why this moment resonates beyond mere defeat. “But then, when he realizes at the end that the Librarians have kind of tricked him, but they’ve also saved him as well, I think it’s a very humbling experience for him.”

Once Merlin awakens from the spell and comprehends what the team has done, the Librarians face a decision on how to proceed with him. Rather than imprisoning him or neutralizing the threat permanently, the Library assigns Merlin a new role: categorizing and preserving its collection of magical artifacts, with Excalibur standing guard to keep him in check.

While this isn’t complete freedom, it isn’t pure punishment either, positioning Merlin to potentially return if the show continues. Despite involving Camelot, apparent character deaths, and a total historical rewrite, the finale concludes Season 2 with a surprisingly complete ending rather than a cliffhanger, resolving Merlin’s arc while still leaving the door open for future stories.

Currently, TNT has not officially renewed ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter’ for a third season, though Devlin has expressed enthusiasm for continuing the story if given the opportunity, including potentially bringing back more familiar faces from the broader franchise. Monaghan has also indicated interest in reprising Merlin, whose redemption arc and new library role provide ample room for him to return as an ally rather than a threat.

With its central antagonist neutralized and the team poised for whatever comes through the Annex door next, ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter’ concludes Season 2 on solid ground while clearly hoping for more chapters to come.
