M. Night Shyamalan Teams Up With Nicholas Sparks for ‘Remain’ Trailer Release
M. Night Shyamalan has crafted a career filled with genre-defying twists, but his latest project presents an intriguing collaboration. The visionary behind ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Signs’ is stepping into the realm of romance, a genre not typically associated with his work, thanks to Nicholas Sparks, the author known for his heartfelt love stories.
This is what makes ‘Remain‘ such a fascinating endeavor. Instead of a conventional adaptation, the film originated from a shared story idea between Shyamalan and Sparks. Each creator has developed their own interpretation, with Shyamalan directing the film while Sparks authored a companion novel released last year that features the same characters and storyline.
The first teaser trailer for this unique collaboration has just dropped, revealing a theatrical release date of February 5, 2027. This positions the film as a counterprogramming option for Valentine’s Day from Warner Bros. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Tate, a grieving architect who moves to a small coastal town to finish a project after leaving a psychiatric facility, where he meets a captivating young woman entangled in a deadly local mystery.
That young woman is Wren, portrayed by “Bridgerton” breakout Phoebe Dynevor. Her character disrupts Tate’s carefully constructed, grief-laden existence. Warner Bros. has described the project as “an unprecedented collaboration between two of the world’s most creative minds,” highlighting the unusual blend of Shyamalan’s supernatural elements with Sparks’ romantic melodrama.
The cast also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, and Maria Dizzia, providing a strong ensemble to support the film’s mystery. Shyamalan produces through his Blinding Edge Pictures alongside Ashwin Rajan, with Sparks’ long-time producing partner Theresa Park and Marc Bienstock also involved, while Sparks serves as an executive producer.
Warner Bros. selected the February release date after noting strong pre-sales for another romance, ‘Wuthering Heights’, which is set to hit theaters around Valentine’s Day this year. The studio has increasingly recognized February as an underutilized opportunity for counterprogramming, and ‘Remain’ seems designed to tap into the seasonal demand for romantic narratives.

Interestingly, industry insiders have reported that ‘Remain’ has achieved the highest test scores of Shyamalan’s career, a remarkable statement considering his long history of mixed critical and audience responses. This positive reception suggests that the unexpected genre combination may resonate with test audiences more than anticipated.
On the technical side, the film features cinematography by Adolpho Veloso and a score by longtime Shyamalan collaborator James Newton Howard, whose music has significantly shaped the tone of Shyamalan’s films over the years. With its supernatural themes intertwined with a central romance, ‘Remain’ appears set to carve out a distinct niche in both filmmakers’ portfolios.
Given the noticeable age difference between Gyllenhaal’s and Dynevor’s characters in the trailer, early reactions have raised questions about this dynamic. However, it remains to be seen how the film will address this aspect narratively. Whether ‘Remain’ ultimately emphasizes Shyamalan’s penchant for twists or Sparks’ emotional depth may become a central topic of discussion among critics and audiences when it finally premieres.
