Legacy sequels have become one of Hollywood’s most challenging ventures, particularly when revisiting a film whose acclaim is largely driven by its fanbase rather than critical reception. The original ‘Practical Magic’ serves as a prime example of this phenomenon, having spent nearly three decades as a cherished autumn classic despite a critical response that never quite matched its cult status.

The 1998 film, featuring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, debuted with a disappointing 27 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics at the time often cited its uneven tone and significant deviations from Alice Hoffman’s original novel. However, the film’s enchanting atmosphere and the strong chemistry between its leads have solidified its place as a Halloween favorite over the years.

Now, with ‘Practical Magic 2‘ officially hitting theaters, it seems history may be repeating itself. The sequel currently holds a 39 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 23 reviews, a score that, while still low, marks an improvement over the original’s critical reception.

Directed by Susanne Bier, with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett, and Kelly Marcel, the sequel is based on Hoffman’s follow-up novel “The Book of Magic.” It follows the Owens sisters as they confront dark secrets and a centuries-old family curse that threatens their loved ones. Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian, joined by an expanded cast that includes Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing.

Early reviews indicate that the sequel is landing in a familiar territory for the franchise: divisive among critics but likely to be embraced by longtime fans. A review from Future of the Force described the film as “a solid but safe legacy sequel that does just enough to make the journey worthwhile,” particularly praising the enduring chemistry between Bullock and Kidman as the film’s standout feature, despite a somewhat conventional narrative.

This “safe but charming” reception aligns closely with how audiences have historically embraced the original, despite its critical shortcomings. The first film earned a much warmer 73 percent audience score on the Popcornmeter, contrasting sharply with its low Tomatometer rating. This sets a reasonable expectation for a similar disparity between critics and general audiences this time around.

The sequel is released in theaters as part of a broader initiative by Warner Bros. to revive several of its dormant franchises, following a business arrangement that has brought multiple legacy sequels, including ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, into development. This context adds extra pressure on ‘Practical Magic 2’ to demonstrate that nostalgia-driven follow-ups can achieve both critical and commercial success.

With a runtime of one hour and 50 minutes and a wide theatrical release now underway, ‘Practical Magic 2′ faces a crucial test in how audiences respond once general moviegoers get their first glimpse of the Owens sisters’ latest chapter. Given the franchise’s history of fan loyalty often surpassing critical consensus, the audience reaction may ultimately prove more significant than the current Tomatometer score.
