‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Close to Breaking Box Office Records
Domestic box office records often seem out of reach for over a decade, yet Tom Holland’s latest Marvel film is currently in a position to change that. Few movies manage to maintain cultural relevance six weekends into their theatrical run, let alone stay the highest-grossing new release in the country week after week.
This remarkable staying power has become the hallmark of this particular Spidey adventure this summer. Since its record-breaking debut in late July, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has steadily climbed the all-time domestic charts, breaking benchmark after benchmark with a consistency that is increasingly rare in today’s theatrical landscape.
Now, the film has achieved a significant milestone, crossing $923 million domestically after a sixth consecutive weekend at number one. This total leaves it just $13 million shy of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, which has held the record for the highest-grossing domestic release of all time since 2015 with $936 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Given the film’s current trajectory, box office analysts widely predict that ‘Brand New Day’ will soon claim that record, officially becoming the highest-grossing movie ever released at the North American box office. This would cap off an extraordinary run that has already included the biggest domestic opening weekend in history and the fastest ascent to $900 million domestically, a milestone it reached in just 36 days compared to ‘The Force Awakens’s 50-day pace.
The film’s six-weekend reign at number one places it in rare company. Reports indicate that ‘Brand New Day’ now joins ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and the first two ‘Avatar’ films as among the few movies to hold the top spot for six consecutive weeks, a feat matched only a handful of times across decades, including ‘Titanic’, ‘The Fugitive’, and ‘Home Alone’ during the 1990s, with no film achieving this between 1998 and 2008.
Globally, the film’s success tells an equally impressive story. ‘Brand New Day’ has now surpassed $2.4 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film ever released, trailing only ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion. While it may not overtake either of those films for the worldwide crown, especially with ‘Endgame’ set to add more receipts through its own September theatrical re-release, ‘Brand New Day’ has already secured its place among the most successful theatrical releases in cinema history.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film has thrived due to a combination of strong critical reception and a notably light competitive field throughout its run, factors that have allowed it to maintain box office momentum well past the point where most blockbusters typically start to fade. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which also stars Holland, has consistently held second place during much of this period, achieving an impressive eighth-weekend performance without ever seriously threatening Spidey’s hold on the top spot.
With the finish line for the all-time domestic record now clearly in sight, all that remains is to see just how large a margin ‘Brand New Day’ ultimately claims once it officially surpasses ‘The Force Awakens’. Given the film’s remarkably consistent weekend-to-weekend holds, that record-breaking moment seems to be a matter of when, not if.
