The realm of AI has birthed numerous captivating figures in recent years, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman standing out as a particularly intriguing character. Following his unexpected dismissal and swift reinstatement in 2023, Altman’s narrative has taken on the essence of a Hollywood thriller, making it ripe for cinematic adaptation.

Director Luca Guadagnino is the one bringing this story to life with the film ‘Artificial’, which dramatizes the tumultuous five days during which Altman was fired and subsequently rehired as OpenAI’s leader. Andrew Garfield stars as Altman, supported by a talented cast that includes Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Mark Rylance.

The film’s trailer, released this week, quickly went viral, attracting attention from both industry insiders and the general public. Jack Altman, Sam’s younger brother and a partner at venture capital firm Benchmark, shared a candid reaction to Garfield’s performance, humorously noting that the only aspect the film seemed to capture accurately about his brother was the way he walks.

Jack’s remarks resonated beyond just his family followers, as Pirate Wires founder Mike Solana echoed his sentiment online, calling Garfield’s interpretation of Altman’s walk remarkably accurate, despite skepticism surrounding the rest of the portrayal.

‘Artificial’ is shaping up to be anything but a traditional cradle-to-boardroom biopic. Written by ‘Miracle Workers’ creator Simon Rich, the film focuses on the intense moments surrounding Altman’s firing, culminating in a tense confrontation between Garfield’s Altman and Yura Borisov’s portrayal of former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, who was reportedly instrumental in orchestrating that firing.

The teaser embraces unsettling, almost cult-like visuals, following Garfield’s Altman as he navigates a seemingly mundane compound that eventually reveals a vault filled with weapons. In voiceover, Garfield’s Altman ominously states that they opened Pandora’s box together, suggesting a darker interpretation of the early days of the AI boom.

Garfield has clarified that his performance is not intended as a literal imitation of the tech executive. He mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that he does not personally know Sam Altman, framing his portrayal as a unique interpretation rather than a direct recreation.

This distinction may be significant for viewers seeking to differentiate dramatized elements from reality, especially given the buzz surrounding the film’s tone. With Jack Altman’s reaction gaining traction shortly after the trailer’s release, it’s evident that the Altman family is closely monitoring how this portrayal is received.

‘Artificial’ has already had a noteworthy journey to its release. Amazon initially backed the project but dropped it this past summer after investing $50 billion in OpenAI, leading to a conflict of interest that allowed Neon to acquire distribution rights.

The film is set to premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival on October 5, before opening in limited theaters on Christmas Day, with a broader theatrical rollout planned for January 2027. Given the early reactions to the trailer from both critics and the Altman family, ‘Artificial’ appears poised to be one of the most discussed releases of the awards season.
