‘Reacher‘ has been gradually intensifying its central conspiracy throughout the fourth season, and the penultimate episode finally begins to reward that buildup. After a season that balanced rapid developments with some slower moments, the action ramps up just in time for the finale countdown.

The episode, titled “Vote For Sampson,” premiered on Prime Video on September 9 and picks up right where the previous cliffhanger left off. Reacher and Detective Tamara Green find themselves in a dire situation in the woods, while Jacob Merrick remains in police custody, seemingly without options.

However, the grim scenario takes a turn almost immediately when an unexpected ally steps in to rescue Reacher and Green from imminent danger, paving the way for the team to finally uncover the true motives behind the season’s conspiracy.

Reacher and Green are rescued in a van just as their captors prepare to finish them off. Springfield, who works for Congressman Sampson, intervenes and neutralizes the men transporting them. Sent by Sampson to investigate the mysterious photo central to the season’s plot, Springfield seizes the moment to act.

With Green and Springfield now supporting him, Reacher quickly resumes his investigation. He tracks down Leo Ahlquist and extracts crucial information, discovering that the photo reveals chemical weapons research that, when combined with AI, could lead to a weapon of mass destruction.

The episode also clarifies the positions of various characters. Sampson was unaware of the weapons research; had he known, he would have acted to shut it down immediately. In contrast, his former commander Cahill was fully aware and had warned Ahlquist to retrieve the photo before it could be used against them. With the formula now in Lila and Amisha’s hands, the threat becomes increasingly serious.

Meanwhile, Jacob receives an unexpected opportunity. Detective Docherty, who was transporting him, realizes the situation is more complex than it seems and allows him to go instead of taking him to jail, offering assistance if needed. Jacob reunites with Reacher and Green, just as they discover that Lila and Amisha plan to sell their weapon at an upcoming dark web auction, necessitating a test first.

Initially, the team believes the test will occur in Philadelphia and identifies a likely target, with Docherty coordinating police backup to intervene. However, the plan collapses when Lila and Amisha fail to appear, leaving Docherty embarrassed and the team back at square one.

Reacher shifts his focus and reaches out to Sampson again, suspecting the real target might be during the morning rush hour. It turns out the actual target is much closer to Sampson himself: his own campaign fundraiser. Since Sampson was responsible for the downfall of the general Amisha once served, he becomes a prime target for the attack.

As Reacher and the team rush to the fundraiser, Sampson utilizes his training to spot the suicide bomber before anyone else does. Reacher arrives just as tensions peak, but it is Sampson who ultimately takes decisive action, tackling the bomber and driving him into a nearby river just as the bomb detonates.

The episode concludes with the season’s central conspiracy coming into sharp focus, setting the stage for a likely explosive finale. With the formula now recognized as a threat and Lila and Amisha still at large, ‘Reacher’ Season 4 Episode 8 is set to air on September 16, promising to escalate the stakes even further.
