Anyone who has watched a dubbed show knows the frustration: dialogue in one language flowing while an actor’s mouth continues to move in another. This mismatch has been a persistent annoyance in streaming, creating a barrier to fully immersing viewers in international content.

Streaming platforms have been working for years to make foreign-language hits more accessible, employing subtitles and traditional dubbing on popular international series. Prime Video has been particularly proactive, having tested AI-assisted dubbing across a dozen licensed titles in English and Latin American Spanish as early as March 2025.

Now, the platform is taking its efforts further. Amazon’s Prime Video is set to enhance English-language dubs by using AI to synchronize the actors’ lip movements on screen, with this new feature debuting first on ‘Maxton Hall,’ the German-language romance that has become Prime Video’s most-watched international original series to date.

According to Prime Video, the system utilizes AI and visual effects technology to adjust the lip movements of actors so they align more naturally with the translated, human-performed dialogue. Instead of relying solely on synthetic voice generation, this feature works in conjunction with professionally dubbed audio, employing visual manipulation to bridge the gap between what viewers hear and see.

Raf Soltanovich, vice president of technology at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, shared insights on the rollout through Amazon’s newsroom. He emphasized the company’s commitment to innovating tools that enhance the viewing experience, positioning the lip-sync feature as part of a broader initiative to make global content more seamless and immersive.

Launching this feature on ‘Maxton Hall’ is a strategic choice, given the show’s remarkable success on the platform. The series became Prime Video’s most successful International Original at the time of its first season release, achieving the number one spot on Prime Video’s charts in over 120 countries and territories during its opening week.

Lip-sync dubs are now available starting today on ‘Maxton Hall’ Seasons 1 and 2 globally in English, and this feature will also be integrated into the show’s third and final season when it premieres on Prime Video on December 9. This concluding season, based on the 2018 novel ‘Save Me’ by Mona Kasten, will consist of six episodes and will be released across more than 240 countries and regions.

While Prime Video has not revealed specific details about the AI tools powering the new lip-sync system, the company has maintained a level of secrecy regarding the underlying technology. This approach reflects the company’s broader strategy concerning its AI dubbing initiatives, which emphasize human oversight rather than complete automation.

The earlier AI-assisted dubbing pilot, which included titles like ‘El Cid: La Leyenda,’ ‘Mi Mamá Lora,’ and ‘Long Lost,’ was described as a hybrid process where localization professionals collaborated with AI tools while retaining ultimate quality-control responsibilities. The new lip-sync feature appears to build upon that same localization philosophy.

With Prime Video confirming plans to expand this technology to additional titles in the future, the rollout on ‘Maxton Hall’ likely marks just the beginning of a significant shift in how the platform manages dubbed content moving forward. Given the increasing engagement with international programming across major streaming services, innovations like this could greatly enhance how comfortable global audiences feel exploring shows produced outside their native language.
