Sacha Baron Cohen to Star in Quentin Tarantino’s Stage Play ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’
Quentin Tarantino has spent decades crafting a unique voice in modern cinema, celebrated for his genre-blending scripts filled with sharp dialogue and memorable characters. After hinting at a departure from filmmaking for what he claimed would be his final movie, the director is now making an unexpected shift to an entirely different medium.
This shift marks Tarantino’s first-ever stage play, featuring an equally surprising lead. Sacha Baron Cohen, the comedian renowned for his roles as Borat and Ali G, will make his stage debut as the title character in Tarantino’s upcoming production, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier.’
Described as a “swashbuckling comedy” set in 1830s Europe, the play is characterized as “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.” The official synopsis promises “a sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”
Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, known for ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ and ‘Paddington: The Musical,’ in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ is set to premiere at a yet-to-be-announced West End venue in London during spring 2027. This production will not only be Tarantino’s first foray into stage work but also Baron Cohen’s debut.
Although Baron Cohen has primarily focused on film and television, he does have some theatrical experience. He appeared in the 2007 film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Sweeney Todd,’ portraying Signor Adolfo Pirelli, which connects him to the musical theater tradition as he prepares for this fully staged production.
The casting news comes at a particularly busy time for Baron Cohen, who is set to reprise his comedic character Ali G in the upcoming Amazon MGM feature ‘Ali G Who Iz I?,’ which will be released globally in October. With this film and his surprising stage role, Baron Cohen seems to be diving deep into nostalgic and boundary-pushing comedic territory as the new year approaches.
For Tarantino, this project signifies a true creative shift after years of speculation surrounding his long-anticipated tenth and reportedly final film. The director has previously stated he’s “in no hurry” to finish that movie, indicating that ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ could take up to two years to complete, suggesting this theatrical venture is a significant undertaking rather than a fleeting side project.
Details about the play’s complete plot remain limited beyond its historical setting and comedic premise, and no director has been announced for the production as of now. Further casting announcements are expected in the coming months as the West End debut date draws nearer.
This represents a notably different creative path for a filmmaker best known for genre-blending crime dramas and stylized violence, swapping cinematic shootouts for period-set farce and mistaken identities. Coupling this transition with Baron Cohen’s chaotic, boundary-pushing comedy only heightens the anticipation for what audiences can expect when the curtain finally rises.
With Sonia Friedman Productions’ history of transforming beloved franchises into successful stage adaptations, and Tarantino applying his distinctive voice to a new format, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ has already sparked considerable excitement well over a year before its scheduled premiere.
For now, fans will need to stay tuned for more information regarding casting, venue, and plot details as the production approaches its spring 2027 opening.
