Charlie Hunnam Clarifies Sons of Anarchy’s Legacy Revival Is Not Season 8
Few TV endings resonated as deeply as the one FX delivered for ‘Sons of Anarchy’ in 2014, concluding its seven-season journey with the deaths of many key characters, including Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller. For years, that finale was regarded as a definitive conclusion in the realm of prestige cable drama, leading fans to believe it would remain untouched.
So, when FX quietly announced last month that the biker drama would return in some capacity, with Hunnam and much of the original cast involved, reactions on social media ranged from excitement to utter confusion. How can a show return when its entire cast was either buried, burned, or arrested by the end credits?
Hunnam is now clarifying what this new project entails and, importantly, what it does not. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed that the new series titled ‘Legacy’ is certainly not a continuation with season 8 of ‘Sons of Anarchy.’
Rather than resuming the story in Charming, California, the new series is said to follow a much stranger premise. According to the official logline, the cast of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ reunites at a fan convention more than a decade after the show concluded, only to find the line between fiction and reality blurring as they confront a real-world threat.
This means Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi are all expected to return, but not necessarily as Jax, Clay, Tara, and the rest of SAMCRO. The project has been described as a love letter to the original series, wrapped in a meta twist on what long-time viewers think they know about these characters.
Part of the surprise surrounding the announcement stems from Hunnam’s wish for fans to remain unaware of the project for as long as possible. He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he preferred to keep it under wraps, but a few persistent outlets uncovered the information before FX was ready to make its official announcement on August 19.

The announcement also confirmed that ‘Sons of Anarchy’ creator Kurt Sutter is not directly involved in writing or producing ‘Legacy,’ although his wife and franchise veteran Katey Sagal is part of the cast. Despite stepping back from hands-on involvement, Sutter has reportedly given the project his public blessing.
FX Productions and 20th Television are overseeing the production of the new series, which is set to air on FX before streaming on Hulu. Hunnam is developing and executive producing alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn, ensuring he remains closely involved both in front of and behind the camera.
Fan reactions to the concept have been mixed since the initial announcement, with some long-time viewers expressing skepticism about altering a finale many consider nearly perfect. Others seem cautiously intrigued by the idea of watching the actual actors portray heightened, fictionalized versions of themselves rather than resurrecting characters who were definitively written off years ago.
Regardless of how ‘Legacy’ ultimately unfolds, Hunnam’s remarks indicate that the team behind it is aware of the risks involved in revisiting beloved, completed material. By framing the project as something entirely distinct from a traditional continuation, the actor seems to be attempting to manage expectations before a single frame has been aired.
