Paul Wesley Calls Full Enterprise Crew Reunion ‘Truly Magical’ in ‘Strange New Worlds’ Finale
Paul Wesley has dedicated several seasons to crafting his unique interpretation of one of science fiction’s most beloved characters, stepping into a role that both William Shatner and Chris Pine made iconic long before he boarded the Enterprise. As ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ approaches its conclusion, Wesley’s portrayal of James T. Kirk is finally reaching the moment fans have eagerly anticipated.
This pivotal moment revolves around Kirk’s promotion to Captain of the USS Enterprise, marking the official transition from Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike and signaling the start of the character’s most renowned journey. Season 4 has been steadily building toward this significant change, with the fifth and final season, which completed filming last December, set to showcase this crucial shift.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Wesley shared what this journey has meant to him personally, revealing that his favorite moment as Kirk stems from a scene he cannot fully discuss yet without revealing spoilers. When asked about his best experience playing the character, Wesley highlighted the on-set magic of finally having Kirk’s complete Enterprise crew together on screen.
“There was something truly magical about having these characters on screen together,” Wesley said, referring to the recently confirmed appearances of Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu in the finale. He expressed that the chemistry among the cast clicked into place during filming, noting that there was clearly “something working” once the full ensemble was assembled on set.
This complete lineup features Kirk’s crew alongside Ethan Peck’s Spock, Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura, Martin Quinn’s Scotty, and Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel, offering longtime fans their first proper view of the classic Original Series team fully united within the prequel timeline. Notably, Ensign Pavel Chekov is absent, as his introduction occurs later in Star Trek continuity during the second season of the original series.

Wesley’s insights are particularly significant given his thoughtful approach to honoring the character throughout his tenure on the show. He has previously mentioned his decision to avoid imitating William Shatner’s original portrayal, opting instead to create his own distinct interpretation of a younger, evolving Kirk. This approach has garnered him support from Shatner himself, with Wesley revealing that they have had multiple conversations, and Shatner has consistently offered encouragement during his time in the role.
With Season 4 continuing to build toward Kirk’s official promotion and the series finale promising the full crew reunion Wesley fondly described, ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ seems poised to conclude its run by finally presenting the classic ensemble fans have been hoping for since Wesley’s casting was first announced. Given the care taken to develop that chemistry on set, expectations remain high for how the show will ultimately connect its prequel storyline to the era audiences are already familiar with.
‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 is currently streaming on Paramount+.
