Marvel’s mutant reboot has been making waves for weeks, especially after the studio revealed its new lineup of X-Men. With casting announcements, set images, and a steady flow of fan theories, this project has become one of the most anticipated elements of the post-Multiverse Saga era.

The focus has been particularly sharp on one role: Professor Charles Xavier. Having been portrayed by two distinct actors in the past, any new actor stepping into his iconic wheelchair is bound to face comparisons, nostalgia, and a fair amount of online discussion.

Now, the actor most closely associated with a younger version of the character has finally shared his thoughts. James McAvoy commented on Christopher Abbott’s casting as the new Professor X during his visit to Entertainment Weekly’s studio at the Toronto International Film Festival, expressing his support for the actor taking on the role.

In his conversation with the outlet, McAvoy kept his remarks positive and encouraging rather than possessive. He wished Abbott and the rest of the new cast, saying, “Good luck to him! Good luck, good luck, good luck,” a sentiment Entertainment Weekly reported came during his studio appearance on Friday.

McAvoy continued by expressing his hopes for the new team as they embark on this franchise. He humorously noted that Marvel doesn’t need much assistance in promoting their films, given the studio’s vast promotional machinery, and mentioned he was there to promote a different project of his own.

Abbott’s casting was confirmed alongside several other key roles at Disney’s D23 fan event, where Marvel unveiled the full cast for its new ‘X-Men’ film. Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, with Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Inde Navarrette as Rogue, while Adam Driver has also been announced in a villainous role.

This film represents the first ‘X-Men’ movie developed from the ground up as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, rather than continuing the standalone franchise that McAvoy helped establish. Jake Schreier is directing, and the movie is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.

McAvoy first took on the role of Charles Xavier in ‘X-Men: First Class’ when Fox rebooted the franchise’s origins, later reprising his role in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse.’ His performances were pivotal in anchoring the prequel trilogy, showcasing a more youthful and fiery version of the character compared to Patrick Stewart’s earlier, more composed portrayal.

Stewart, however, is not stepping away from the role entirely. He is set to reprise Professor X in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ continuing the character’s multiversal presence even as Marvel develops a separate, recast version for the new timeline.

Reactions to Abbott’s casting have been mixed since the announcement, with some fans expressing reluctance to see anyone other than McAvoy or Stewart in the role. Social media discussions following the reveal included skepticism, along with curiosity about how Abbott, known for his darker, more intense performances, might reinterpret the character.

This uncertainty makes McAvoy’s public endorsement particularly significant for longtime fans of the Fox-era films. Instead of mourning the end of an era or criticizing the new production, he framed the transition as an exciting opportunity, while acknowledging the pressure that comes with taking on such a recognizable character.

It also serves as a reminder that generational transitions are not new to superhero franchises, even if they often spark debate. As ‘X-Men’ progresses further into production, all eyes will be on how Abbott approaches a character so closely tied to two previous performances.

For now, McAvoy’s message provides a rare moment of goodwill in a casting cycle that has otherwise been marked by fan anxiety and online disputes. Whether this goodwill translates into a more positive reception once actual footage is released remains to be seen.
