‘Resident Evil’ Box Office Projections Surge Ahead of Global Release
Zach Cregger has been steadily establishing himself as a key figure in modern horror. With the chilling atmosphere of ‘Barbarian’ and the chaotic ensemble of ‘Weapons,’ he has earned a reputation for transforming simple concepts into significant box office successes.
This momentum is now converging with one of the most iconic horror franchises in gaming, and industry experts are paying attention. As Cregger’s version of ‘Resident Evil’ approaches its theatrical release, the early buzz has shifted from cautious optimism to genuine excitement.
According to tracking data from industry analyst Global Box Office, ‘Resident Evil’ is projected to open with a global box office between $120 million and $150 million in its debut weekend. Pre-sales have already begun in several countries, with premium formats like IMAX and other large-screen options reportedly performing exceptionally well internationally.
This level of international interest signifies a notable change for a franchise that has traditionally relied heavily on audiences outside North America for its box office success. Domestic tracking suggests a record-breaking opening for the series, with early estimates indicating a start around $35 million, which could rise as advance ticket sales exceed expectations.
Some reports have suggested even higher domestic figures, with estimates reaching between $40 million and $50 million. Either figure would comfortably surpass the $26.7 million opening weekend record set by 2010’s ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ for over a decade.
Much of the confidence in these projections stems from Cregger’s previous film. ‘Weapons’ debuted with $43.5 million domestically and concluded its run with $151.5 million in North America and approximately $270 million globally, all against a modest budget.
Such a return has significantly altered the industry’s perception of Cregger’s box office potential as he prepares for a much larger project. ‘Resident Evil’ reportedly has a production budget of around $80 million, meaning even the lower end of current global projections would represent a considerable success for Sony.
The film centers on Bryan, a medical courier portrayed by Austin Abrams, who finds himself caught in a chaotic outbreak while making a delivery. Instead of adapting a specific game or focusing on established characters like Leon Kennedy or Jill Valentine, Cregger has crafted an original narrative that runs parallel to the games’ lore.
This approach has sparked some debate among longtime fans, but Cregger aims to translate the gameplay experience into the film. He has emphasized the importance of resource management, noting that viewers will always be aware of how many bullets remain in Bryan’s gun, a detail he discussed in comments reported by PC Gamer.
If the higher end of the global projection holds true, ‘Resident Evil’ would surpass several recent genre hits. For instance, ‘Alien: Romulus’ opened with approximately $108.2 million worldwide in 2024, while ‘Scream VI’ debuted around $67 million in 2023, positioning Cregger’s film as a potential new standard for horror openings.
In response to the international demand, Sony has intensified its global marketing efforts, sending Cregger and Abrams on a worldwide press tour leading up to the release. The studio clearly sees a chance to transform a long-dormant franchise into a major global event rather than a niche domestic release.
‘Resident Evil’ is set to hit theaters on September 18, coinciding with Warner Bros.’ ‘Practical Magic 2’ in what promises to be a fiercely competitive late-summer release window. The film’s ability to maintain its IMAX and premium-format momentum through opening day will likely determine whether it lands closer to the lower or upper end of its current projections.
