Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ saga has been building toward this moment for nearly five years. What began as a bold attempt to adapt one of science fiction’s most notoriously “unfilmable” novels has evolved into one of the defining blockbuster franchises of the decade, with its conclusion just months away.

As the trilogy’s final chapter is set to hit theaters this December, excitement has been steadily rising on both sides of the Atlantic. Ticket releases for premium formats have turned into recurring online events, with fans eagerly refreshing booking pages as new showtimes become available.

This frenzy has now reached the UK, where major cinema chains are scrambling to keep up. Cineworld and Odeon both added extra early IMAX and PLF screenings of ‘Dune: Part Three’ today, increasing capacity for December 15 showings after initial early tickets sold out faster than anticipated.

Odeon has reportedly gone further by opening a brand new session at one of its West End Dolby locations to accommodate the overflow. These early screenings will take place three days before the film’s wider UK release, allowing eager fans to experience the trilogy’s conclusion ahead of its official December 18 opening.

London’s BFI IMAX is also part of this preview rollout, featuring a December 15 screening presented in IMAX 70mm on what the venue claims is the largest screen in the country. Tickets for this specific showing went on sale at 9 a.m. on September 9, and demand for this format has been so intense that additional capacity has become a recurring theme throughout the film’s marketing campaign.

Villeneuve has expressed his desire for audiences to experience ‘Dune: Part Three’ on the largest screen possible. At an exclusive trailer event in Los Angeles with stars like Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem, he emphasized the importance of seeing the film on a grand scale, a sentiment echoed in comments reported by Sharp Magazine.

This philosophy aligns with the film’s production, as much of ‘Dune: Part Three’ was filmed using a mix of IMAX-certified digital cameras and IMAX film cameras, marking Villeneuve’s first full-length use of the format throughout an entire production.

‘Dune: Part Three’ takes place nearly two decades after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two,’ with Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, now ruling as Emperor and confronting the ramifications of his power. The film adapts Frank Herbert’s novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and sees the return of Zendaya as Chani, alongside Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem. Pattinson joins the cast as a new villain named Scytale.

This isn’t the first time ‘Dune: Part Three’ ticketing has created a stir. Previous waves of IMAX 70mm sales in the United States reportedly sold out within hours, with resale prices on secondary markets skyrocketing well past face value, with some listings reaching nearly $1,000 for a single seat.

American audiences have also faced technical difficulties while trying to secure early access, with booking apps crashing under heavy traffic during earlier on-sale periods. This trend appears to be repeating in the UK as well, as cinema chains strive to accommodate fans who missed out on earlier ticket allocations.

Part of the urgency likely stems from the timing. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to open the same December weekend as ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ creating one of the year’s most anticipated box office showdowns and providing Warner Bros. with added motivation to generate buzz through early screenings before the wide release.

Whether these newly added UK screenings will suffice to meet demand remains to be seen, but for now, fans eager to catch ‘Dune: Part Three’ early have a few more opportunities than they did just yesterday. Given how quickly previous ticket waves have disappeared, anyone still hoping to secure a seat should act fast.
