Sebastian Stan has been a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for nearly fifteen years, portraying Bucky Barnes through various adventures, from World War II flashbacks to epic Avengers battles. Such a long-standing connection to a single franchise makes any shift to a competing universe feel significant.

This year, Stan made that leap by joining Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman: Part II’, quickly becoming one of the most discussed crossovers in recent superhero film history. The announcement alone ignited extensive online discussions about the implications of an actor so closely associated with Marvel stepping into Gotham City.

Now, as he prepares for his new role, Stan has shared insights into the disorienting nature of this transition. Reflecting on his first foray into the DC universe, he acknowledged that despite his extensive experience in one major comic book franchise, he realized how little he knew about the broader comic book landscape once he made the switch.

Stan is set to portray Harvey Dent in the eagerly awaited sequel, a role he confirmed while promoting his Palme d’Or-winning film ‘Fjord’ at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. In an interview with Deadline, he described the project as an ambitious challenge and expressed genuine excitement about collaborating with Reeves, whom he has admired for years, as reported by Deadline.

He also shared his high expectations for the film, predicting it would surprise audiences significantly, citing Batman’s enduring cultural relevance as evidence of the character’s lasting appeal. His enthusiasm has only intensified as production has progressed, with Stan admitting during press for ‘Fjord’ that he feels excited, nervous, and focused on continually surprising himself in this role.

Playing Harvey Dent presents its own unique challenges, especially considering the character’s eventual transformation into Two-Face and the complex physical and emotional layers involved in portraying both aspects of that arc. Stan has already begun collaborating with hair and makeup teams to develop how that transformation will be depicted on screen, indicating the production’s serious approach to the character’s evolution.

Stan has also been open about the unconventional filmmaking process for this project. Instead of working from a complete script, he has described filming fragmented scenes without having access to the entire storyline, a strategic choice designed to prevent plot leaks before the film’s release.

This secrecy extends beyond Stan’s performance. Reeves has reportedly implemented strict security measures to keep the screenplay tightly under wraps, highlighting the studio’s careful management of the sequel’s narrative ahead of its debut.

The film will also feature a strong ensemble cast returning from the original, including Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred, alongside newcomers like Scarlett Johansson, another Marvel veteran making her own transition to DC. This crossover between the two universes has sparked further discussions about the increasingly fluid boundary between Marvel and DC talent in recent years.

For longtime fans of Stan’s portrayal of Bucky, witnessing him step into such a dramatically different aspect of the superhero genre adds an intriguing layer to an already highly anticipated sequel. Whether his character emerges as an ally, antagonist, or something more complex, his comments suggest that even he is still uncovering the full extent of what he has signed up for.
