Noah Reid To Star In CBS’s ‘Sheriff Country’ Medical Spinoff
CBS has successfully established one of broadcast television’s most dependable hit factories in a small town in Northern California. What began as a simple firefighter drama has evolved into a vast universe, with each new offshoot attracting its own loyal audience rather than merely capitalizing on its predecessor’s success.
This expansion strategy has proven effective enough that the network is now advancing with its third series set in the world of Edgewater. Following the achievements of ‘Fire Country’ and its spinoff ‘Sheriff Country,’ CBS has been working on a medical drama within the same universe for several months, with details gradually emerging about who might lead the new show.
The search has now concluded. Noah Reid has been chosen to headline the still-untitled ‘Sheriff Country’ medical spinoff, joining Max Thieriot and Morena Baccarin as a key figure in the expanding CBS franchise, according to an exclusive report from Deadline.
The ‘Schitt’s Creek’ star will make his debut in one episode of ‘Sheriff Country’s’ upcoming second season, portraying Dr. Hudson “Hud” Henshaw. This guest appearance comes with a series regular option, meaning Reid could transition directly into the lead role of the spinoff if CBS officially greenlights the project.
Reid’s character serves as Chief of Emergency Medicine at Edgewater Memorial Hospital, informally known as “Edge Med” within the franchise. Hud is characterized as charming and quick-witted but rough around the edges, shaped by his upbringing in the outlaw area of Edgewater called Deadwater.
According to his character description, Hud is the son of convicted felons who chose not to use his family’s drug money to finance his medical education. He is depicted as deeply committed to the community that raised him, embodying his medical oath while still being the kind of person who won’t hesitate to engage in a bar fight when necessary.
This isn’t the first time CBS has employed this strategy to launch a spinoff within the franchise. Baccarin’s Sheriff Mickey Fox followed a similar path, initially appearing as a guest star on the original ‘Fire Country’ before leading her own successful series once the network decided to move forward.

The anticipated medical drama would mark the third series in a franchise that began with ‘Fire Country’ in 2022, which followed Thieriot’s character Bode Donovan-Leone as a convict participating in a Northern California firefighting program. Franchise co-creators Max Thieriot, Tony Phelan, and Joan Rater remain attached to the new project, alongside executive producers Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed.
Reid’s casting follows what Deadline described as an extensive search for the right actor to lead the role, indicating that the network was particularly selective about who would guide its next major expansion. Given the significant impact Baccarin’s introduction had on ‘Sheriff Country’s’ eventual success, this careful approach aligns with how seriously CBS is treating this next chapter.
Reid brings a diverse background to the role, best known for his portrayal of Patrick on ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ a performance that earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award alongside his castmates and multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations. Recently, he has appeared in Prime Video’s ‘Outer Range’ alongside Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots, as well as in the third season of ‘Interview With the Vampire.’
With CBS clearly committed to expanding this universe rather than starting anew with different concepts, Reid’s casting seems like a natural progression in an increasingly ambitious television landscape. Whether the medical spinoff can achieve the same success as its predecessors will likely depend on how well Hud’s introduction resonates with ‘Sheriff Country’ viewers this season.
