Hilary Duff’s ‘A Cinderella Story’ Tops Peacock’s Streaming Chart

Some teen movies remain timeless, continuously circulating among streaming platforms as new audiences discover them. Peacock’s current movie chart exemplifies this trend, filled with 2000s nostalgia ranging from vampire romances to animated comedies.

The list features titles like ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ maintaining solid positions, while a few newer entries fluctuate near the bottom.

Claiming the top spot after just seven days on the chart is ‘A Cinderella Story’, the 2004 film starring Hilary Duff, which has quietly emerged as a defining teen rom-com of its time. The movie debuted at number one without any prior ranking data, indicating a fresh wave of interest rather than a gradual ascent.

Directed by Mark Rosman, the film modernizes the classic fairytale, following Samantha, portrayed by Duff, a kind-hearted high schooler who is forced into servitude by her wicked stepmother Fiona, played by Jennifer Coolidge, after her father’s sudden passing. Samantha finds solace in anonymous late-night chats with a mystery classmate, only to realize at the school Halloween dance that her secret crush is Austin Ames, played by Chad Michael Murray, one of the school’s most popular students.

The supporting cast includes Dan Byrd as Samantha’s best friend Carter and Regina King as her fairy godmother figure at the family diner. Critics were notably harsh upon the film’s release, giving it a low 11 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus labeling it as an uninspired retelling of the fairy tale.

Despite the critical backlash, the film proved to be a commercial success against its modest budget and has since become a certified cult classic, spawning four sequels and solidifying its status as comfort viewing for a generation that grew up quoting its memorable dance floor confession scene.

Two decades later, ‘A Cinderella Story’ debuting at number one on a streaming chart highlights how enduring that nostalgia remains. Are you rewatching for Chad Michael Murray’s iconic mask reveal, or is this your first time experiencing Samantha’s Halloween dance?
