Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated ‘X-Men’ reboot has been creating excitement ever since its ensemble cast was revealed at D23 in August. With unexpected casting choices and fan discussions about who fits each iconic mutant, the film has quickly become one of the most closely monitored projects on Marvel’s upcoming slate.

Among the new cast members, Inde Navarrette’s role as Rogue stands out, particularly because the character’s distinctive Southern accent has been integral to every previous portrayal of Rogue in film and animation. Fans are eager to see how the breakout star from ‘Obsession’ will tackle a dialect so closely linked to the character’s identity.

Navarrette has opened up about her plans to master that accent, sharing a personal connection to the Southern women who inspired Rogue. She mentioned that she spent a significant part of her childhood in Texas, drawing inspiration from her memories of women from Corpus Christi, stating, “Those Southern women are really my favorite.”

Navarrette is also planning to visit Mississippi, Rogue’s home state in the comics, to further refine her accent and mannerisms before stepping into the role.

Rogue’s Mississippi roots have always been a defining aspect of her character across Marvel media, with the comics depicting her upbringing in the fictional Caldecott County, a rural area near the Mississippi River. This regional identity has influenced nearly every version of the character, from Lenore Zann’s iconic voice work in the 1990s animated series to Anna Paquin’s more subdued live-action portrayal in Fox’s original ‘X-Men’ film franchise.

Navarrette’s approach indicates she aims for a more pronounced, comic-accurate accent, contrasting with the subtler version Paquin presented decades ago. Given the cultural significance of Rogue’s voice and cadence for long-time fans, her commitment to physically travel for research demonstrates how seriously she is taking this role.

The actress shared her insights during a conversation with Entertainment Tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she also discussed the excitement surrounding her new opportunities following her standout performance in ‘Obsession.’ The success of that film played a crucial role in her being cast in the Marvel project, despite some fans supporting other actresses rumored for the role.

Navarrette joins a talented ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Jake Schreier is directing the film from a script by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, marking the character’s debut in the core Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than Fox’s standalone franchise.

The film is set to release on May 5, 2028, giving Navarrette ample time to develop her portrayal of the character before filming begins. With Marvel’s focus on getting this new mutant roster right, her hands-on research approach aligns with the studio’s commitment to this reboot.

Whether her accent work will evoke comparisons to Zann’s theatrical animated performance or create something entirely new remains to be seen. For now, Navarrette’s dedication to exploring both her personal history and Rogue’s Southern roots indicates she understands the importance of this detail to the character’s legacy.
