Jimmy Kimmel Is Not Leaving ABC as Renewal Talks Are Confirmed
The late-night television landscape has faced significant upheaval over the past year, with declining ad budgets and changing viewer habits prompting networks to make tough decisions about their established franchises. Among those navigating this turbulence is Jimmy Kimmel, whose show has recently dealt with both financial challenges and political controversies.
This tension resurfaced last September when ABC temporarily pulled ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ off the air for six days due to backlash over Kimmel’s comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s death. The suspension sparked considerable backlash from political figures, celebrities, and industry unions, leading Disney to reinstate the show after what they described as thoughtful discussions with Kimmel.
Given this context, recent tabloid rumors suggesting Kimmel intended to leave his ABC show upon the expiration of his contract in May seemed plausible to some. However, these reports have been debunked, as Kimmel is currently in negotiations to renew his contract for another year, as confirmed by Deadline.
Kimmel and Disney are actively discussing the terms of this extension, with Debra O’Connell, chair of Disney Entertainment Television, reportedly requesting budget cuts as part of any renewal agreement. This aligns with a broader cost-reduction strategy across Disney’s television division, which has included layoffs, early-retirement offers, and an anticipated restructuring under O’Connell’s leadership.
The financial dynamics of these negotiations highlight the current state of late-night television. According to ad-tracking firm Guideline, total ad spending in late-night TV plummeted from $519.7 million in 2017 to just $209 million in 2025, with ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ accounting for $51.1 million of that total in 2024 alone.
This financial pressure has transformed the late-night landscape beyond Kimmel’s show. CBS has canceled ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ while ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ has undergone its own rounds of cuts, including the elimination of its house band and extended production breaks to reduce costs.
Kimmel’s program transitioned from a standard three-year contract to a one-year deal in 2025, reflecting both his long-standing role and the increasingly precarious economics facing late-night television. Despite these challenges, Kimmel’s show has reportedly experienced a ratings boost since Colbert’s departure from CBS, giving him a stronger negotiating position than industry trends might indicate.
Adding an intriguing twist to the timing of these negotiations, Kimmel recently announced that Stephen Colbert will guest on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on September 15, marking Colbert’s first late-night appearance since ‘The Late Show’ ended earlier this year. Kimmel had previously invited Colbert to guest-host his show after the cancellation, but Colbert declined, feeling the timing was premature.
This reunion comes at a pivotal moment for Kimmel’s future at ABC, adding significance to the appearance for those following the ongoing contraction in the late-night industry. With one of Colbert’s closest peers negotiating his own future, the discussions surrounding Kimmel’s renewal carry symbolic weight for the format as a whole.
Neither Disney nor Kimmel’s representatives have publicly commented on the specifics of the ongoing negotiations. For now, the confirmation that talks are taking place should quell earlier tabloid speculation, although the exact terms of any potential deal, including the extent of the requested budget cuts, remain unresolved.
