DCU’s ‘Clayface’ Teases New Trailer With Eerie Gotham City Promo Art
James Gunn’s DC Universe has been diligently expanding its lineup over the past year, moving beyond the typical capes-and-cowls narrative to include genuinely surprising genre experiments. Among these, ‘Clayface’ stands out as a project that caught even dedicated DC fans off guard when it was first announced.
The intrigue only deepened with the release of the film’s initial trailer earlier this year, showcasing a body-horror interpretation of the iconic Batman villain that is unlike any previous attempts by the studio. As the film’s Halloween-adjacent release date approaches, marketing efforts have understandably begun to intensify.
Recently, new promotional art for ‘Clayface’ emerged online, depicting a dark, moody Gotham City skyline oozing with clay-like sludge beneath the film’s striking blood-red title. This atmospheric image has sparked fan speculation that a new trailer may be imminent, especially with the release date drawing near.
This timeline aligns with how DC Studios has previously rolled out the film’s promotions. The studio first unveiled a teaser trailer in April, providing audiences with a glimpse of Tom Rhys Harries’ disfigured actor-turned-shapeshifting villain, followed by a more comprehensive trailer in July ahead of that summer’s Comic-Con.
‘Clayface’ centers on Matt Hagen, portrayed by Harries, an aspiring actor whose promising career and leading-man looks are tragically shattered after a confrontation with a Gotham crime boss leaves him severely disfigured. In his desperation, Hagen turns to a scientist played by Naomi Ackie, who offers him an experimental treatment that restores his appearance but comes with a harrowing cost to his grip on reality.
Director James Watkins, known for ‘Speak No Evil,’ is at the helm of this project, which features a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Flanagan’s connection to the project dates back several years, with Gunn previously noting that DC Studios had no specific plans for a Clayface film until Flanagan submitted a script that the studio deemed one of the best it had ever received.
The film’s cast includes David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James, alongside Ackie and Harries in leading roles. Unlike Matt Reeves’ separate ‘Batman’ franchise, ‘Clayface’ is firmly situated within Gunn and Peter Safran’s core DC Universe continuity, making it a significant building block for the studio’s larger shared world rather than a standalone tale.
‘Clayface’ is currently slated to hit theaters on October 23, having shifted from an earlier September date to better align with the studio’s strategy of capitalizing on the Halloween moviegoing season. This timing is reminiscent of recent post-Labor Day horror successes like ‘The Nun’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ both of which attracted strong audiences by embracing the autumn window.
The release date also positions ‘Clayface’ just weeks ahead of Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman: Part II,’ giving DC Studios consecutive opportunities to keep Gotham City’s rogues gallery in the public eye as we move into next year. With a reported production budget of around $40 million, the film represents a relatively low-risk investment for the studio compared to its larger blockbuster releases.
Given how uniquely ‘Clayface’ has distinguished itself from conventional superhero marketing, this new promotional art indicates that DC Studios is gearing up to delve even deeper into the project’s unsettling, body-horror aesthetic as the release date approaches. Whether this means a full trailer drop in the coming days or simply another atmospheric teaser remains to be seen, but the timing certainly aligns.
