‘Lioness’ Star Laysla De Oliveira Discusses Joe and Cruz’s Emotional Reunion Ahead of Season Finale

Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller universe has always put its characters through intense challenges, but ‘Lioness‘ has taken this season to a more personal level. What began as a narrative focused on undercover missions abroad has increasingly explored the emotional toll those missions take when the danger comes home.

This shift is particularly evident in Laysla De Oliveira’s portrayal of Cruz Manuelos, whose evolution from a hesitant Marine recruit to a skilled operative has become the emotional core of the series. In season three, she finds herself in a rare moment of stability, both in her career and personal life, even as chaos surrounds her.

However, this newfound stability faces a significant test this season when the aftermath of a mission in Ukraine leads to Zoe Saldaña’s Joe being abducted right outside her home. With the threat now on American soil rather than a distant battlefield, Cruz, alongside her partner Josie, played by Genesis Rodriguez, and the rest of the team, must execute a rescue, culminating in an emotional reunion between Joe and Cruz that fans have eagerly anticipated.

De Oliveira has described this season as a significant departure from the show’s earlier globe-trotting adventures, labeling it raw, explosive, intense, and personal. This perspective aligns with the increasing proximity of danger, as the CIA’s covert operations finally intersect with the characters’ personal lives.

Cruz’s journey this season also highlights her growth since the first season, where De Oliveira humorously referred to her as “baby Cruz.” The actress has noted how her character begins to see the similarities between herself and her mentor Joe, realizing that the moral boundaries she once perceived clearly have become increasingly ambiguous as she remains in the field.

This growth extends into her personal relationships as well, with Cruz’s bond with Josie providing her with a level of adult intimacy she had not experienced in earlier seasons. Unlike her initial connection in season one, which was marked by secrecy and forbidden closeness, her relationship with Josie represents a more open and meaningful connection, a detail De Oliveira has expressed made this season particularly rewarding to explore.

Behind the scenes, the series remains entirely shaped by Sheridan, who not only writes every episode but also appears as Delta Force operator Cody Spears this season, marking his most significant on-screen role since ‘Sons of Anarchy.’ De Oliveira has shared insights about the demands of working at his pace, likening it to a sport where the cast must be fully prepared for scenes and details that can change at a moment’s notice.

With ‘Lioness’ releasing new episodes weekly on Paramount+, the season is building toward its finale on September 20. De Oliveira has indicated that fans can expect the payoff to be as intense as everything that has led up to it. Given the emotional depth already explored between Joe and Cruz, their reunion moment is set to be one of the most pivotal turning points in the series thus far.

For a series that has spent three seasons deepening the relationship between its two lead characters, witnessing that bond tested under the most personal circumstances feels like the kind of payoff that dedicated viewers have been longing for.
