HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Casts Colin Creevey for Season 2 and Fans Are Excited
Some characters from Hogwarts never received the screen time that book readers believed they deserved, vanishing from the film series almost as quickly as they appeared, despite having more significant roles in J.K. Rowling’s original novels. One such character has finally found new life in HBO’s ongoing television adaptation.
That character is Colin Creevey, the camera-loving, Harry Potter-obsessed Gryffindor first introduced in ‘Chamber of Secrets.’ The search for his casting began in June as HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series prepared to enter production on its second season. Casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann had been holding auditions for months, with reports of recall rounds indicating how seriously the production was taking this role.
The search has now concluded. Jasper Ambrose has been cast as Colin Creevey for Season 2 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter,’ filling one of the most anticipated roles as the show continues to expand its adaptation of ‘Chamber of Secrets.’ This casting news comes alongside a wave of other Season 2 announcements, showcasing how quickly the production has been securing its expanded ensemble in recent weeks.

Colin Creevey’s history within the franchise makes his casting particularly significant for longtime book readers. Actor Hugh Mitchell portrayed the character in the original 2002 film adaptation of ‘Chamber of Secrets,’ but Creevey was omitted from the movie series after that single appearance, despite being a recurring character in the rest of Rowling’s novels.
In the books, Creevey continues to appear well beyond his introduction, unwittingly providing information to journalist Rita Skeeter during ‘Goblet of Fire’ and later fighting alongside Dumbledore’s Army against Dolores Umbridge’s regime. His story ultimately concludes during the Battle of Hogwarts, where he is killed by Death Eaters after sneaking back into the castle despite being banned under Voldemort’s Muggle-born expulsion laws.
HBO’s choice to properly cast and develop Creevey for the series reflects the broader promise behind the show’s approach, which treats each of Rowling’s seven novels as a dedicated season rather than condensing the story into a few feature films. This structure allows the production significantly more room to explore characters that the original movies simply didn’t have time for.
Ambrose’s casting comes amidst a broader wave of Season 2 announcements, following recent additions like Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley and Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle. The season has also faced its share of behind-the-scenes changes, including the recasting of Ginny Weasley after original Season 1 actress Gracie Cochrane departed the production, with her family releasing a statement calling her time in the franchise “truly wonderful.”

With Season 2 currently filming back-to-back with Season 1 in the UK, and production expected to continue through the fall, HBO seems determined to maintain momentum as it works toward a faithful adaptation of ‘Chamber of Secrets.’ Properly integrating Creevey into the series suggests the show intends to give him the fuller arc he never received on the big screen, advancing his story well beyond his introduction.
For fans who have long believed Creevey deserved more attention than the films ever provided, Ambrose’s casting serves as a genuine sign that HBO’s adaptation is committed to honoring the complete scope of the books.
