Marvel Studios has been building excitement for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ for months, relying heavily on merchandise to reveal details that haven’t been confirmed through trailers. With the film’s main villain still a mystery, collectible reveals have become a key way for fans to gather insights about what to expect.

This mystery revolves around Robert Downey Jr.’s surprising return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not as Tony Stark, but as the villainous Victor von Doom. The casting announcement shocked audiences at San Diego Comic-Con, marking a significant turn for an actor whose Iron Man character died in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and positioning Doom as the primary antagonist in both ‘Doomsday’ and its 2027 sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

A newly released Funko Pop figure has provided fans with their clearest look yet at Doctor Doom’s on-screen appearance. The figure showcases Doom in a hooded, heavily armored design, complete with his iconic metal mask and gauntlets, offering a stylized, comic-inspired interpretation of Downey’s version of the character.

This reveal is part of a larger wave of official ‘Doomsday’ merchandise that has been gradually released over the past several months. Funko Pop figures related to the film first appeared as preorder listings through collectible retailer 1001 Hobbies back in June, featuring a lineup that includes Doctor Doom, Thor, Mr. Fantastic, Magneto, Cyclops, Gambit, Shang-Chi, Namor, and Yelena Belova, all expected to ship ahead of a November release, just a month before the film’s theatrical premiere.

Doctor Doom’s exact appearance on screen seems to vary across different merchandise reveals, indicating that the character may don multiple costumes throughout the film. Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles previously unveiled a separate 1:6-scale Doctor Doom figure priced at $285, followed by another version showcasing an alternate look as Victor von Doom, featuring a muted green tunic, hood, and cloak instead of the heavily armored suit seen in the earlier release.

This variation in costumes among collectibles has sparked speculation among fans, especially since Marvel has yet to provide a full public reveal of Downey’s Doom in an actual trailer. Until that occurs, these staggered merchandise drops are effectively performing the role of an early wardrobe reveal that a traditional marketing campaign would typically handle.

In addition to the villain himself, the broader Funko lineup has hinted at the film’s overall scope. The inclusion of characters like Cyclops and Magneto suggests direct X-Men involvement in the multiversal conflict, while Namor and Shang-Chi indicate a broader MCU roster playing significant roles rather than mere background cameos. Marvel Studios has clearly positioned Downey Jr.’s Doom at the forefront of the film’s marketing and merchandise strategy, underscoring the character’s importance within the larger multiversal narrative.

It’s important to note that not all Doctor Doom merchandise circulating online has proven to be authentic. A separate leaked image claiming to show early Funko Pop designs emerged back in January, only to be confirmed as a fake by Funko through the reliable tracking account DisTrackers. The more recent listings, however, come from an official retail source, adding credibility to the reveals.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, bringing together the Avengers, Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men in a converging conflict against Doom, these merchandise reveals are likely to continue providing fans with small pieces of the puzzle in the coming months. Given Marvel’s careful timing with each drop, it’s clear the studio wants Doctor Doom’s presence felt well before audiences see him fully unmasked on the big screen.
