Reality competition television seldom creates a true cultural phenomenon, but ‘The Traitors‘ has achieved just that since its debut on Peacock in January 2023. Hosted by Alan Cumming in a castle in the Scottish Highlands, this murder-mystery competition series has become must-watch television for fans drawn to its mix of strategy, paranoia, and betrayal.

The show’s momentum has surged recently. It just clinched its third consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program at the 2026 Primetime Emmys, triumphing over contenders like ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ ‘Survivor,’ and ‘Top Chef.’ Cumming humorously accepted the award on behalf of the producers, noting that they finally understood what completing a mission on the show felt like.

Peacock has given fans another reason to celebrate, announcing that ‘The Traitors’ has been renewed for three more seasons. This decision solidifies the show’s reputation as one of the streamer’s most dependable and successful original productions, ensuring that the castle doors will remain open for years to come.

This long-term commitment highlights the show’s impressive journey since its inception. The franchise has already garnered nine Emmy Awards across various categories, including competition program, host, directing, casting, cinematography, picture editing, and costumes—an unusually diverse collection for a reality series still in its early stages. Cumming has been a consistent presence, bringing his unique blend of theatrical flair and dry humor to the show.

Part of the renewed investment stems from the franchise’s adaptability. Instead of sticking solely to its celebrity-driven format, the show is branching out with ‘The Traitors: New Blood,’ a civilian spin-off set to premiere on September 17 on NBC. This new version replaces reality stars and public figures with 22 everyday Americans selected from over 80,000 applicants.

The civilian cast is notably diverse, featuring participants like a nurse, an astrophysicist, and a barrel racer, all competing in the same high-stakes game of deception that made the original format popular. Cumming first announced the civilian spinoff at the inaugural Televerse 2025 conference in Los Angeles, with production on the NBC edition beginning earlier this year ahead of its fall premiere.

Meanwhile, the traditional celebrity edition of the show continues as well. Season 4 concluded earlier this year with Rob Rausch winning as a secretly designated Traitor after successfully deceiving runner-up Maura Higgins throughout the competition. Season 5 is anticipated to return to Peacock in January, maintaining the celebrity format alongside the newly launched civilian version.

With consecutive Emmy wins, a newly announced three-season renewal, and a fresh spinoff format launching soon, ‘The Traitors’ appears set to remain a leading reality franchise on television for the foreseeable future. Given the show’s consistent ability to reinvent itself while maintaining its core format, it’s clear why Peacock is making a significant investment in its ongoing success.
