Ezra Miller Discusses ‘The Flash 2’ Release Date and Leaves Fans Guessing
Few DC films have had as intricate a legacy as 2023’s ‘The Flash,’ a movie that debuted with high expectations, an exciting multiverse concept, and the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman. However, it was largely overshadowed by star Ezra Miller’s ongoing legal issues. Despite these challenges, the film still managed to present one of the more creative time-travel narratives that DC has attempted on screen.
Regrettably, that creative ambition did not equate to box office success, with ‘The Flash’ earning only $271.3 million globally against a reported budget of $200 to $220 million. This disappointing performance, coupled with the transition to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe, left the future of any potential sequel in a state of uncertainty for years, even though a script was said to have been written shortly after the initial film’s release.
This uncertainty persists, as Miller made evident in a recent video. When a fan directly inquired about the release date for ‘The Flash 2,’ Miller candidly replied, “God only knows,” a straightforward yet honest response that reflects the unresolved status of the sequel years after the first film’s debut.
Such a noncommittal response aligns with everything reported about the project since Gunn and Safran took charge of DC Studios. Barry Allen’s arc in the first film concluded with him in an alternate timeline that is entirely separate from the current DCU continuity, and Gunn has yet to confirm Miller’s involvement in his ongoing plans for the franchise.
The ambiguity surrounding Miller’s future with DC goes beyond just box office figures or scheduling issues. After years of reported legal troubles, including a felony burglary arrest in Vermont and other public incidents, there were long-standing questions about whether the studio would even want to continue the character’s story with Miller involved.

Despite the speculation, Miller made a rare public appearance at ‘The Flash’s’ Los Angeles premiere in 2023, expressing gratitude to Warner Bros. Discovery leadership and DC Studios’ Gunn and Safran for their support during that time. This moment provided a glimmer of hope that the door hadn’t been completely shut, even as the broader DCU continued to progress without any confirmed plans for a direct sequel.

With Gunn’s DC Universe currently concentrating on titles like ‘Superman’ and other new franchise entries, ‘The Flash 2’ remains precisely where Miller’s comment suggests: an open question with no definitive timeline in sight. Whether the character will eventually return to DC’s plans, and if Miller would reprise the role if he does, remains very much uncertain.
