The HBO Max spinoff of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ has always embraced the bizarre, and by the penultimate episode of Season 1, ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ has taken its most ambitious leap yet. Fans familiar with the original sitcom knew that Stuart’s comic book passion would eventually intersect with real superheroes on screen.

This unexpected crossover occurs in a way that surprises everyone. Instead of a simple nod to the DC universe, the show plunges Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke directly into the pages of a comic book, navigating through Gotham City and Central City in their quest to return home.

The result is an episode set entirely within the DC universe, a concept the show had hinted at but never fully explored until now. Titled ‘Spoiler: We Couldn’t Get Green Lantern,’ the ninth episode marks a significant moment as the series immerses its characters in a vibrant superhero world rather than merely referencing it from afar.

This immersion includes a notable live-action debut for the franchise: The Flash, specifically the Golden Age version, Jay Garrick, portrayed by Andy Ridings, who assists the group in escaping their comic-book dilemma. It’s a small yet pivotal moment for a spinoff centered around characters who spent 12 seasons of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ dreaming of such crossovers.

Garrick isn’t the only familiar face in this episode. Mister Freeze, played by Eric Allan Kramer, serves as the antagonist, even as Stuart humorously points out that Freeze is a member of Batman’s rogues gallery rather than Flash’s. Co-creator Zak Penn explained that this intentional mismatch allows the characters to voice their frustrations about such inconsistencies, reflecting their personalities as they navigate a comic book world.

Interestingly, Green Lantern is notably absent, a fact that the episode’s title hints at. Co-creator Chuck Lorre revealed to TV Guide that this omission was due to a scheduling conflict, as HBO is heavily invested in its other DC series, ‘Lanterns.’ Lorre stated that the network couldn’t allow ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ to poke fun at Green Lantern.

Mayim Bialik also makes a return as an alternate version of Amy Farrah Fowler, this time married to Garrick’s Flash, rather than reprising her earlier role as Stuart’s psychiatrist. Riki Lindhome appears again as a Gotham City flight attendant, continuing the show’s trend of bringing back ‘Big Bang Theory’ alumni in new and unexpected roles.

The creators believe that the episode’s charm lies not just in the superheroes but in the everyday moments surrounding them. Co-creator Bill Prady shared with TVLine that they aimed for Stuart to infuse his extensive nerd knowledge into this comic-book environment while still highlighting its more mundane aspects, such as jokes about airport delays and a secret superhero closet.

One of the episode’s standout moments features Stuart narrating an off-screen super-speed battle between Flash and Mister Freeze, which the show couldn’t afford to film. Lorre described it as one of his favorite scenes, while Prady humorously likened it to classic radio drama.

For a spinoff that has explored increasingly strange alternate realities throughout its first season, fully embracing a realized DC universe, complete with a live-action Flash, feels like the show is finally delivering on its long-built premise. It also showcases the wealth of comic-book knowledge co-creator Zak Penn brought to the writers’ room, ensuring that the episode’s deep-cut references resonate authentically rather than feeling forced.

With the Season 1 finale set to air next week and a second season already confirmed, this DC-infused penultimate episode appears less like a standalone gimmick and more like a glimpse into how far ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ is willing to push its multiverse concept in the future.
