Marvel’s decision to bring ‘Avengers: Endgame’ back to theaters has certainly captured the attention of dedicated fans. What has surprised many, however, is the rapid accumulation of presale numbers as tickets became available in international markets.

Set to hit theaters globally on September 25, ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ has already achieved impressive milestones in its lead-up. This re-release isn’t merely a nostalgic revisit; it also features new footage linked to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which is set to premiere in December.

Presales in China have launched, and the initial response has been remarkable, with the opening earnings surpassing ¥500,000, or about $75,000, almost immediately after ticket sales began. Observers suggest that this pace could position the film for a top spot globally.

China wasn’t the only market demonstrating strength. Reports indicate that presales in various overseas regions have outperformed openings of other comic book films like ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Superman,’ mirroring the advance sales pattern seen with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ earlier this year.

This momentum has also translated into the domestic market. ‘Endgame Encore’ achieved the largest first-day presales this century for any theatrical rerelease within hours of tickets going on sale in late August, surpassing the record set by the 2012 3D re-release of ‘Titanic.’ The all-time domestic rerelease record remains with the 1997 re-release of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope.’

The surge in presales is part of a larger narrative: the ongoing competition between ‘Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’ for the title of highest-grossing film of all time. Currently, ‘Avatar’ leads with $2.923 billion globally, following its successful 2022 re-release that pushed it past ‘Endgame’s’ total of $2.79 billion.

Industry analysts estimate that ‘Endgame Encore’ would need to generate approximately $124.3 million in additional worldwide grosses to surpass ‘Avatar’ once more. Domestic projections for the opening weekend range from $19 million to $28 million, with a potential global opening weekend exceeding $60 million based on the original film’s overseas performance.

Part of the strategy behind this re-release seems to be to heighten anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which has already amassed over $50 million in advance ticket sales at the 100-day mark before its release. The Russo Brothers have suggested that viewing ‘Endgame’ again is almost essential before the new film arrives.

This sentiment appears to resonate with audiences, as many are eager to experience the film in theaters once more. Whether driven by curiosity about the new footage, a wish to see Tony Stark’s journey on the big screen again, or genuine excitement for what ‘Doomsday’ promises, ticket buyers in China and beyond are treating this re-release as a significant event.

The broader box office context highlights why these figures are noteworthy. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ recently became the eighth film to surpass $2 billion globally, landing at number 3 all-time with a total of $2.4 billion, reminding us that the MCU’s appeal remains strong, even as some analysts point to a general decline in international interest, particularly regarding China’s box office in recent years.

In this environment, a seven-year-old film regaining such attention is remarkable. It indicates that Marvel’s loyal audience is still eager to show up when the studio provides a compelling reason, whether through new footage, a connection to an upcoming film, or simply the chance to relive a pivotal moment in franchise history on the big screen.

While the numbers from China are still in the early stages, and presale enthusiasm doesn’t always translate into final grosses once the opening weekend arrives, the buzz generated by a film released over seven years ago is impressive, especially with ‘Doomsday’ on the horizon for December.

Online fan discussions have already noted the scale of the response, with box office trackers indicating that the presale momentum suggests ‘Endgame Encore’ could genuinely contend for the top global position during its opening days. Such discussions were rare for re-releases prior to this year, reflecting both the enduring appeal of the original film and Marvel’s savvy marketing strategies as they head into ‘Doomsday’ season.
