Video game adaptations have emerged as a reliable trend in Hollywood, and Sony has been steadily expanding its lineup of such projects for years. The studio’s live-action ‘Helldivers’ movie seems to be gaining momentum again after a recent casting shake-up threatened to halt its progress.

Development on the film began back in February 2026, with ‘Fast and Furious’ veteran Justin Lin set to direct. Initially, Jason Momoa was slated to lead the adaptation but exited the project in June, prompting Sony to search for a new star to headline this significant gaming IP.

That search appears to have led to Alan Ritchson. The ‘Reacher’ star is reportedly in talks to take over the role left vacant by Momoa, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, although a deal has yet to be finalized.

Momoa’s departure was said to be due to creative differences, according to sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, though the specifics of those disagreements remain undisclosed. He is currently busy with other video game adaptations, including roles in October’s ‘Street Fighter’ and an upcoming ‘Minecraft’ sequel.

His exit created a significant gap for Sony to fill, as the project is centered around a physically commanding lead. Ritchson has spent recent years establishing himself as that type of action star, and landing ‘Helldivers’ would mark his first major feature film leading role after years of impressive supporting performances.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, ‘Helldivers’ follows shock troopers battling extraterrestrial threats on a fictional planet known as Super Earth. The games are recognized for their blend of large-scale sci-fi combat and a satirical take on authoritarian propaganda, portraying soldiers as expendable parts of a larger war machine.

This tone has led to some skepticism regarding how Ritchson’s traditionally heroic persona will fit into a narrative focused on anonymous, disposable troopers rather than a singular chosen hero. It remains to be seen whether Lin’s script will embrace that satire or approach the action in a more straightforward manner.

Lin’s involvement brings a filmmaker experienced in managing large ensembles and high-budget action sequences, skills that are essential for a story rooted in coordinated squad-based combat. Sony has set a theatrical release date of November 10, 2027, although that timeline could shift depending on how quickly the studio secures its lead.

This move aligns with a broader trend of studios seeking established action stars for major gaming adaptations, banking on their name recognition to attract audiences to properties that may not yet be household names. ‘Helldivers’ has cultivated a dedicated fanbase since its games launched, but translating that enthusiasm to a wider theatrical audience will heavily depend on who ultimately leads the project.

Ritchson’s rising profile since ‘Reacher’ premiered in 2022 makes him a fitting choice for this casting search. If the deal is finalized, it would provide Sony with a recognizable face to anchor its marketing campaign while keeping the production on track for its 2027 target.

This role would also signify a significant shift in scale for Ritchson’s career. He has garnered a loyal fanbase through ‘Reacher’ and accumulated supporting credits, but stepping into a major studio release comes with a different kind of pressure than television, where a devoted streaming audience can sustain a show over multiple seasons without needing to win over a broad theatrical crowd on opening weekend.

While nothing is official yet and negotiations could still fall through as they did with Momoa earlier this year, with Lin already attached and a release date set, Sony seems determined to keep ‘Helldivers’ moving forward.

The stakes are high for Sony as well. The studio has invested significantly in expanding its gaming adaptations beyond the Spider-Man universe, and a misstep in casting this early in development could cast a long shadow over the production before filming even begins. Securing a lead soon would greatly reassure fans that ‘Helldivers’ is still very much on track.
