Pokémon enthusiasts have long envisioned a genuine Pokémon MMO, a vast shared universe where trainers from all regions can finally meet. Every few months, new rumors emerge, reigniting the community’s hopes. The concept has never seemed entirely implausible, especially as the franchise has gradually introduced more online features with each new generation.

The franchise is currently in a transitional phase. ‘Pokémon Winds and Waves’ was revealed on February 27, coinciding with the franchise’s 30th anniversary, marking the first games of Generation 10 and a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive set for 2027. With ‘Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’ launching in November 2022, fans are eager for any hints about what lies ahead.

A recent report may provide some insight. Notable leaker Centro LEAKS suggests that Game Freak is working on a multi-region Pokémon MMO, which could be released after Generation 11 instead of as part of it. This claim was shared on X on September 17 and has since gained traction across gaming news outlets and social media.

Centro LEAKS argues that Game Freak has been laying the groundwork for years. In Generation 8, players could encounter random online trainers in specific areas, while Generation 9 expanded this to interactions across the entire map. The leaker claims that Generation 10 will introduce MMO-style quests and cooperative gameplay with friends.

This progression aligns with what fans have already experienced. ‘Pokémon Sword and Shield’ allowed players to see other trainers in the Wild Area, and ‘Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’ enabled friends to explore the open world together. Initially, the leaker suggested that a full MMORPG could launch with Generation 11 or late in Generation 10, but another source clarified that the MMO would come afterward, which Centro LEAKS confirmed.

Much of the speculation links this rumor to a project known as ‘Project Seed,’ which first appeared in the Teraleak, a data breach revealing internal Game Freak documents. These documents describe it as a prototyping initiative for a next-generation online game playable by multiple users. Early reports suggest that Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kitakami will be interconnected regions within a single world, although other reports mention a broader list that includes Paldea, Galar, Alola, Kalos, and Unova.

Centro LEAKS is a well-known Pokémon leaker, boasting over 1 million followers across two X accounts, and has a history of sharing roadmap information. A GameRant article from May indicated that ‘Project Seed’ is in pre-production, with a potential release not expected before 2031. Another leaker cited by Vice mentioned that the project remains in active development this year, with insiders speculating a launch after 2029.

Despite the excitement, none of this has been officially confirmed. Game Freak, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company have not announced an MMO, and the leak provides no title, release timeline, platforms, or details on how it would connect to the mainline series. Timing estimates vary widely, from a release alongside ‘Winds and Waves’ to a separate launch toward the end of the decade, highlighting how early the project is reportedly in development.

Other leaks suggest that Generation 11 may debut around 2030, which would place a post-Generation 11 MMO quite far in the future. Meanwhile, the series has maintained a busy schedule with ‘Pokémon Legends: Z-A,’ ‘Pokémon Pokopia,’ and ‘Pokémon Champions,’ which launched on April 8. Game Freak developers have even hinted in a recent video that the franchise’s turn-based battle mechanics could evolve in future titles.

For fans who can’t wait, some have found alternative solutions. According to Dexerto, a Hytale modder has begun transforming classic Pokémon games into a multiplayer MMO that players can enjoy with friends, completely independent of any official Game Freak initiative. While it may not replace the real deal, it demonstrates the community’s strong desire for a shared Pokémon universe.

Until Game Freak provides official confirmation, the MMO remains a rumor rather than a confirmed project. Nevertheless, the trend of online features across three generations lends more credibility to this theory than typical speculation. The next few years will reveal whether the studio is genuinely working toward its most significant technical advancement yet.
