Ben Affleck Explains Why Jennifer Garner Isn’t His Leading Lady in ‘Animals’
Ben Affleck has been quietly establishing a directing career focused on gritty, character-driven crime narratives, and his upcoming Netflix thriller ‘Animals’ fits perfectly into this genre. The film centers on a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped, compelling the couple to scramble for a ransom while buried secrets begin to surface. Affleck not only directs but also stars in the film, working from a script he co-wrote with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray.
The cast features Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, and Ray Fisher, among others, rounding out a project set to release on Netflix and in select theaters on October 9. What audiences might not realize is how different the cast could have been, and how close the film came to reuniting one of Hollywood’s most talked-about former couples on screen.
According to Affleck, ‘Animals’ was initially designed with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, set to star opposite Matt Damon as the couple at the heart of the kidnapping plot. However, Damon had to withdraw from the project due to a scheduling conflict with ‘The Odyssey,’ leaving the lead role open just as production needed to progress.
Affleck ultimately decided to take on that role himself, which shifted the dynamics of casting Garner as his on-screen wife. As Affleck explained, once he was set to play opposite her, the considerations around casting his real-life ex-wife changed significantly, and it was Garner who first expressed concerns.
“I talked to Jen, and she was like, ‘We don’t wanna do that. You just get baggage,’” Affleck recounted, as shared by Variety. He added, “I still would wanna work with her in the future, but what you don’t wanna do is take the audience’s baggage and have it work against you, you know?”
This decision ultimately paved the way for Kerry Washington to step into the role, creating a lead pairing devoid of any real-world history for audiences to project onto the narrative. Given the high-profile nature of Affleck and Garner’s marriage, divorce, and co-parenting relationship over the years, it’s understandable why both reached the same conclusion once the dynamic shifted from an ensemble cast to them portraying spouses directly opposite each other.

Affleck’s remarks clarify that this was not a result of any quiet fallout or lingering tension between them, but rather a practical creative decision made collaboratively. He emphasized that he would still like to collaborate with Garner in the future, just not in a context where their real relationship might overshadow the story the film aims to tell.
This situation serves as a reminder of the considerable baggage, as Affleck himself put it, that comes with casting decisions involving actors whose off-screen lives have been so publicly scrutinized. For a film centered on tension, secrets, and a marriage under strain, incorporating a real-life divorce could have shifted the drama from fiction to a distraction.
‘Animals’ premieres on Netflix and in select theaters on October 9, offering audiences a chance to experience how the final cast navigates the kidnapping thriller premise without the added layer of real-world history.
