Kit Harington Discusses Marvel’s Black Knight Plans and What Happened
Kit Harington’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always hinted at a larger narrative. His introduction as Dane Whitman in 2021’s ‘Eternals’ concluded with a suggestion of a significant Black Knight storyline, featuring a cursed sword and a potential villain origin story.
The teaser scene, where Dane picks up the Ebony Blade and encounters Mahershala Ali’s Blade, ignited fan speculation about a Midnight Sons team-up long before Marvel confirmed such a project. Harington has consistently expressed his desire to revisit the character, previously describing the Ebony Blade’s corrupting nature as a “brilliant allegory about addiction.”
Now, Harington is confirming what many had suspected: the Black Knight plans never materialized into anything substantial. In a recent appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz, he shared that Marvel chief Kevin Feige initially floated the idea, recalling Feige saying, “Look, we’d really love to find something.”
According to Harington, this is typical of Marvel’s approach when considering a character’s future. “They’ll throw a character in and then see if it goes anywhere,” he stated, adding bluntly, “And in the end it didn’t.”
When asked if Marvel ever communicated concrete plans to pair Black Knight with Ali’s Blade for a Midnight Sons project, Harington was clear. “No. No. No,” he replied, clarifying that while there were various ideas, nothing solid was ever communicated.
Despite this setback, Harington still expresses enthusiasm about the character’s potential. He has always been intrigued by the psychological implications of the Ebony Blade, a weapon in Marvel comics that gradually corrupts its user with bloodlust and rage.
“The Ebony Blade is one that he uses and then gets bloodlust, and I think there’s an interesting story of someone going from hero to villain right there,” Harington explained, highlighting the unique narrative possibilities that such a character arc could present.
‘Eternals’ itself faced challenges with critics and did not perform as well as other Marvel films, which likely influenced Feige’s team to hold back on immediate follow-ups for its ensemble cast. Currently, Dane Whitman has not been featured in any upcoming MCU projects.

However, Harington’s remarks indicate that the door isn’t completely shut. “I do think it could be a fascinating story. But they’ve got so much [to work with],” he acknowledged, noting that Marvel has shifted its focus to other areas of its expanding universe since ‘Eternals’ debuted.
For a studio known for revisiting dormant characters years later, Black Knight’s cursed blade and unfinished storyline remain available for exploration. Whether that opportunity will be seized in the future is still uncertain.
