Marvel Studios has been navigating a challenging period in recent years, facing uneven box office results and increasing production costs. This has created significant pressure on the studio to deliver a blockbuster that resonates with audiences and reminds them of the Avengers’ cultural impact.

Early indicators suggest that this moment may finally be upon us. With the film’s December release still months away, ticket buyers are already showing up in numbers that rival some of the biggest openings in box office history.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has now exceeded $55,000,000 in domestic pre-sales, with three full months remaining before its release on December 18. This impressive figure positions the film among the top pre-release sales performances ever recorded in the United States, trailing only two other titles in the all-time rankings.

Currently, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ holds the record with $150,000,000 in pre-release sales from earlier this year, followed by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $130,000,000 in 2019. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ rounds out the top three with $78,000,000 from its 2021 release, placing ‘Doomsday’ in a strong position to climb even higher on this list before its premiere.

The rapid pace of these sales is particularly noteworthy, as tickets for ‘Doomsday’ only went on sale on July 20. This means the film has generated over $50,000,000 in just about seven weeks, an impressive feat for a title still three months from its release.

Hugh Johnston, Disney’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, addressed this milestone at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference earlier this month. “We’re three months out from the movie, and we already have $50 million of pre-sales, literally three months out. So there is a ton of thirst and excitement within that fan base to see another Avengers movie,” Johnston said at the conference.

A significant portion of this demand seems to be linked to premium viewing formats. Over 70% of the film’s pre-sales, approximately $35,000,000, have been for Infinity Vision tickets, Disney’s new certification for premium large-format theaters featuring advanced laser projection and immersive sound.

This premium-format strategy is especially important given the competitive landscape ‘Doomsday’ is entering. The film is set to open on the same day as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which will occupy the domestic IMAX screens during that release window, meaning ‘Doomsday’ won’t be shown in IMAX format at any theater during its opening weekend.

Much of the excitement surrounding these numbers can likely be attributed to the film’s expansive ensemble cast, which features characters from various corners of the franchise. ‘Doomsday’ marks the official MCU debut for several of Fox’s former ‘X-Men’ stars, including Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

The film also integrates the cast of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, along with the ‘Thunderbolts’ lineup that includes Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, and Hannah John-Kamen. With directors Anthony and Joe Russo returning to helm the project, expectations for the film’s scale and ambition are sky-high.

With nearly 100 days left before its release, there is ample opportunity for these numbers to continue rising or stabilize as the marketing campaign unfolds. Nevertheless, a $55,000,000 head start at this point places ‘Doomsday’ among the most anticipated theatrical events in recent memory.

Given the film’s massive ensemble and the Russo brothers’ return behind the camera, it’s evident that audiences perceive this as more than just another sequel in an increasingly crowded franchise landscape.
