Apple TV’s acclaimed spy thriller continues to defy genre expectations, and the latest season is no exception. Season 6 delves into Mick Herron’s ‘Joe Country’ and ‘Slough House’ novels, reintroducing River Cartwright’s estranged father, Frank Harkness, just as former Slough House agents begin to turn up dead under increasingly suspicious circumstances.

The premiere concluded with the killers targeting River, leaving a trail of unresolved tension heading into the next episode. “Daddy Issues” picks up this thread immediately, reshaping everything viewers thought they knew about the season’s central mystery by the time the credits roll.

The episode opens with Frank observing a stray fox confront a garbage van, revealing his activities in London: stealing a file from Regent Park, MI5’s headquarters, with the assistance of a low-level security operative named Andrew Nesmith. Determined to find his father, River has Roddy Ho trace Frank’s rental car and phone, leading them to Andrew’s home, where they discover him dead in what appears to be a staged suicide.

CCTV footage reveals a child was present during Andrew’s death. Roddy identifies the boy as Andrew’s son, Reece, who has been shuffled between foster homes. River quickly realizes that the child may have witnessed something that makes him a dangerous loose end for Frank. This concern is confirmed when Frank ominously refers to a “minor third-party complication,” hinting at Reece himself.

Meanwhile, the assassin duo introduced in the premiere continues their deadly mission against former Slough House agents. After confirming that Kay White’s earlier death was no accident, they set their sights on Moira Tregorian, posing as gas engineers before filling her home with gas and making her death appear accidental.

Diana Taverner, already under scrutiny from the premiere’s fallout, faces increased pressure as the murders and the missing MI5 file attract unwanted attention from higher-ups. Meanwhile, Lamb heads to Regent Park to meet with Molly Doran, trying to understand why Slough House’s records seem to have vanished from the Park’s official servers, conveniently explaining how the killers have tracked their targets so easily.

By the midpoint of the episode, Lamb connects Frank directly to the theft of the stolen files, a discovery serious enough to prompt him to order his agents to go dark and stay off the grid until the threat is contained. This marks a rare moment of urgency from a boss typically more focused on insulting his team than protecting them.

The episode’s final moments are dominated by River. After Roddy traces a taunting phone call back to River’s late grandfather, David Cartwright, River rushes over expecting a confrontation with his father. Instead, he finds Sid Baker waiting for him, the former Slough House agent presumed dead since season one.

The episode concludes abruptly, cutting to credits without revealing how Sid survived or why she has returned at this critical moment. This twist reframes everything viewers thought they understood about Frank’s return and the escalating murders, setting the stage for a complex second half of the season.

With Sid’s reappearance intertwined with Frank’s scheme, Reece’s safety at risk, and Diana Taverner facing mounting scrutiny, ‘Slow Horses’ has a lot of ground to cover in the limited time remaining.
