Some cinematic family trees are so intricate that a single group photo can feel like a monumental movie event. The reunion of Scorsese, DiCaprio, De Niro, and Day-Lewis spans nearly every era of the director’s illustrious career, from his groundbreaking 1970s films to his modern masterpieces. Each name in this gathering represents a significant chapter in American filmmaking.

Robert De Niro has collaborated with Scorsese on 10 films, ranging from ‘Mean Streets’ to ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, while Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in six. Daniel Day-Lewis stands out slightly, having worked with the director only twice, in ‘The Age of Innocence’ and ‘Gangs of New York’. Notably, that 2002 epic is the only film that brought three of these four legends together.

The connections among them are as compelling as the films themselves. Scorsese has mentioned that De Niro encouraged him to meet DiCaprio after their collaboration on ‘This Boy’s Life’, which paved the way for their partnership in ‘Gangs of New York’. Interestingly, De Niro was once considered for the role of Bill the Butcher, which ultimately went to Day-Lewis.

Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, makes rare appearances with Scorsese all the more special. At the National Board of Review gala in January 2024, he surprised attendees by presenting Scorsese with the Best Director award. During his speech, Scorsese hinted that there might be a chance for one more film together, igniting fans’ hopes.

This rich history is why a brief video shared by Film Updates on X resonated so deeply. The 19-second clip, captioned “Last night in New York,” features Scorsese smiling at the center, with DiCaprio waving on one side and De Niro peering over his shoulder. The caption mentions Day-Lewis as part of the group, although reports from the ceremony do not confirm his presence, leaving his involvement somewhat ambiguous.

The occasion seems to celebrate both the director and De Niro. According to franceinfo, French President Emmanuel Macron honored Scorsese and De Niro on Tuesday evening at the Villa Albertine, the French cultural residence in Manhattan, with DiCaprio among the attendees.

Scorsese, 83, received the insignia of Grand Officier of the Legion of Honour, recognizing his decades of dedication to film restoration and support for independent cinemas. De Niro, also 83, was named an Officier of the Legion of Honour for his contributions to film education and independent audiovisual creation. Macron was in New York for the UN General Assembly, and this ceremony was part of that trip.

This honor also ties into a broader discussion about the future of cinema. Macron hosted the Lumière summit on September 7 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence to advocate for the film industry during a time of challenges posed by AI and streaming platforms. Scorsese had previously expressed that this global dialogue was essential, making his recognition in New York just weeks later feel like a natural progression.

Day-Lewis’s potential presence is what transforms a ceremony into a memorable moment. He returned to acting last year for ‘Anemone’, directed by his son Ronan, after an eight-year hiatus, which premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2025. He also mentioned to Empire that he is open to further projects, keeping the hope alive for another collaboration with Scorsese.

While nothing has been officially announced, and it may be premature to read too much into a friendly photo, Scorsese’s earlier hints, Day-Lewis’s return, and this New York gathering create an enticing narrative for cinephiles. Even without a specific project in the works, the image itself is a significant piece of film history.

This moment also serves as a reminder of how personal Scorsese’s career has been. The individuals surrounding him in that clip are not merely collaborators but friends who have significantly shaped his most renowned films. Whether this leads to another chapter in their story or simply stands as a delightful night out, it’s clear why fans are captivated by it.
