Robert Downey Jr. spent over a decade embodying Tony Stark, appearing in 10 Marvel films across 11 years. His character’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ marked a significant farewell. This made his unexpected return as Doctor Doom one of the most surprising developments in Marvel history.

Fans were taken aback. Although Downey had expressed interest in returning to the Marvel universe, many assumed he would reprise his role as Iron Man. Instead, his casting as Victor von Doom was unveiled at Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con, leaving the fandom in shock.

Now, the directors of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are shedding light on why they never considered anyone else for the role. According to a Marvel.com article shared by Cosmic Marvel, the Russo Brothers stated that Downey was always their top choice to portray Doctor Doom in the MCU. This is a bold assertion for a character that has been highly anticipated by fans.

The journey to this casting was not entirely straightforward. The Russos have mentioned that the idea to cast Downey as Doom originated from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. Downey attempted to persuade the brothers to return, but they initially declined as they had yet to develop a story.

Reportedly, Downey agreed to return to the MCU as Doom on one condition: the Russos, who directed ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’, had to come back as directors for both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Clearly, both parties were eager to collaborate again.

The Russos have also noted that Downey was heavily invested in the character from the outset. Joe Russo remarked that the actor was crafting backstory and costume concepts long before filming commenced.

The directors felt confident about Downey’s fit for the role after their initial discussions. What solidified their decision was the unique voice he developed for the character. Speaking to PEOPLE at this year’s Comic-Con, Anthony Russo recalled how Downey “surprised us with one day” with his performance.

Joe Russo added that he felt chills upon hearing it for the first time. This moment reminded him of another iconic scene featuring Downey from ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Such praise comes from directors who have orchestrated some of the franchise’s most unforgettable moments.

The first full trailer showcased Downey as the green-hooded, metal-faced villain, complete with a distinct Latverian accent. Fan responses have varied, with some applauding the boldness while others likened it to a classic vampire impression. The Russos have stated that this costume is their favorite among all five Marvel films they’ve directed.

The portrayal of Doom on screen is a combination of performance and technology. The directors have indicated that Downey executed everything on set, while a digital layer allows them to refine the character in ways that traditional costumes could not.

The stakes are incredibly high. The film unites heroes from three universes, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the X-Men, facing an existential threat. Anthony Russo mentioned during a Variety-moderated panel at SXSW London that “we’re back to phase zero” for the superheroes.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027. Prior to that, ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ will debut on September 25, offering a special preview of the new film. If the Russos are correct about their first choice, Downey’s Doom could be the villain the MCU has been eagerly anticipating.
